Writing articles for the Journal of Accounting Research

The Journal of Accounting Research is not just for accountants, auditors, actuaries and so on; it has a much broader appeal. The journal accepts articles which are accounts of original research that are empirical, analytical, experimental, and even publishes field studies. There are articles in the archives on corporate taxation and general finance, investments, law, capital markets and economics.

The Journal of Accounting Research is highly regarded in its field and is one of the oldest accounting journals in the world. Originally this journal was published by the Accounting Research Centre (1963-2001), although now it is published by the Accounting Research Centre in association with the publishers, Wiley-Blackwell.

If you subscribe to the journal you will receive five publications per year. There are four issues per annum and in addition, a conference issue. The latter publication focuses on the papers presented at the accounting research conference. The annual conference takes place at the University of Chicago.

In 2017 the journal received 489 submissions for all its publications and of these, 16 percent of the new submissions were rejected almost immediately, they were not peer-reviewed. In fact, in 2017 only 9 percent of submissions made it into the journal. Competition for space in the journal is fierce.

Currently the journal is calling for papers for the 2018 conference. Papers can be submitted on any topic related to auditing. If you would like to submit a paper for review, note that all working papers should be received before the 13th July 2018. The conference will be held on the 4th and 5th of October in Washington DC, but delegates will be invited. The conference will not be open to all. However, those people who are invited to attend do so for free.

Conference topics

Topics for papers include, but are not limited to: -

  • the political economy of auditing and accounting
  • the industrial organization of the profession (auditing)
  • the adverse effects on financial markets when businesses fail
  • how international reforms and regulations impact the quality of an audit
  • the use of technology in the auditing processes

For a list of further areas for submissions, go to the official site of the Journal of Accounting Research (JAR).

Submitting papers to JAR

If you decide to submit a paper to the JAR conference, you can also submit it for possible publication in the journal.

  • If you want your paper to be reviewed for submission to the journal, you will have to state this clearly when you send your paper.
  • If you make a dual submission, be aware that only a few people will be invited by the editors to submit to the journal.
  • Dual submissions will not be subject to the usual fees and only these will be reviewed formally.
  • All authors of dual submissions will get a decision from the editors which includes at least one referee report.
  • Submissions which are only for conference papers will not get a referee report.
  • If you submit dual papers, neither should be in the review process of the publication.
  • Papers should not be under review by any other journal. Submissions should not have been rejected by the journal in the past.
  • If your dual submission is rejected, you can, if you choose, submit a revised paper to JAR.
  • It is against JAR’s rules for authors of papers to submit them to any other journal. until, that is, the author has been notified of its status. In other words, wait until mid-September to find out if your paper is going to be reviewed by JAR before sending it to another publisher for possible inclusion.
  • You need to submit your paper in PDF form. It should have a separate page for the title.
  • Papers should be clearly marked "PCAOB/JAR Conference."
  • Those invited to the conference may be eligible for expenses to be paid as long as they are reasonable. These are for both travel and accommodation.
