The response of the church to the problem of homosexuality is difficult; it is so because homosexuality now has become so obvious and conspicuous. It really is shocking how people are developing in the open to be homosexual and exactly how it has been discussed openly and even will get sympathy from some quarters in the cathedral. The obvious simple truth is that it can no longer be ignored. In this particular paper I will discuss how the chapel in Africa should respond to this issue.
ANALYSIS OF CONTROVERSY
Homosexuality is a legal offence in most African countries, although lately there are tries to legalize it in some countries, but it is legal generally in most American states. This is why this can be a controversy to the Anglican Communion which is worldwide.
The definition of homosexuality corresponding to Woods Jr (1968, p. 135) "the word homosexual may be used to refer to various simple gradations of erotic interest or engagement between members of the same intimacy. "
The moralist would dismiss moral objections on homosexuality basing on natural law, which they say natural law assumes that the composition of male and feminine genitals determine their function sexually. The early chapel also criticized same love-making routines, for example Gagnon (2001, p. 163) places it perfectly that " Jews, like Greek and Roman critics of Homosexuality, turned down it on the floor that it was against aspect, that is apart from the fact that the law forbade same-sex intercourse. " He says there are four reasons why only intercourse between male and female was regarded as in accordance with characteristics. The first he says is that there is no procreation in Homosexual intercourse and the next reason is that it's an affront to how God designed the male and feminine organs. The 3rd reason is that there is no natural erotic passion in Homosexual gender says Gagnon and the last he says is that not even pets or animals practice Homosexual intercourse. However, many scholars would dispute that aside from reproduction purposes, love-making serves a number of functions. Corresponding to Woods Jr. (1968) "the common sense that sex is merely for reproduction is really as limited by an agrarian, low-population current economic climate as the view that pearl are valuable is to a consumer current economic climate. "
The Lambeth meeting resolution number 1 1. 10 of 1998 expresses that in view of the teaching of scripture, that matrimony should be between a guy and a woman in a prolonged union, it accepted that there were individuals who experienced themselves as developing a homosexual orientation. A few of these people are church members and for that reason need pastoral care, moral direction and God's transforming ability.
The resolution was to listen to the experience of the homosexual persons and ensure them that God enjoys them. Although they called for the ministry of the pastoral treatment to all regardless of intimate orientation, the resolution did not suggest the legitimizing or blessing of the same love-making union nor ordaining those in same gender union.
Some would dispute that in the Bible it isn't clear what they supposed by homosexuality. For example Bishop David Russell in his leaf let (webpage 3) wrote that the Biblical freelance writers never contemplated the type of homosexual that people are contemplating today, the Partnerships we would like to acquire affirmed inside our time. I really do not agree with him and other people who think in these lines because the Bible is very clear on homosexuality. In Leviticus 20 :13, it's very clear that a man who may have sexual relations with another man, both should be placed to fatality because they have done repulsive thing. The other wording, which condemns homosexuality in the brand new Testament, is Romans 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. it is therefore clear that homosexuality is condemned in the Bible. In case the homosexual of the Bible (Leviticus 20:13) is same as the homosexual of today, then homosexuality is an historic form of erotic perversion.
Those who seem to support homosexual argue that we are all sinful, and we've God who is love, who loves infinitely. They even supply the example of the girl caught in adultery (John 8) Jesus heals are and blessed her. They say this will be our method of the complete problem in African communion.
The latest response regarding homosexuality was in this article, which made an appearance in the Post Newspapers of July 12, 2010, where the Church of Britain blocked the session of a gay clergyman (Jeffrey John) to the post of Bishop. This issue helped bring the liberals and conservatives at loggerheads, and could have possibly have an impact on Arch Bishop Rowan William stand. It's the second time John is being rejected to be consecrated Bishop, on the floor of being homosexual. Williams said he had not been going to allow himself to be pressured into supporting anyone.
According to Reuter as quoted in the post (ibid) Williams has always attemptedto put a stop to the infighting over the problem of homosexuality in the Anglican Communion and last month he warned those member churches, which approves them or actively oppose them that they will be sidelined from public doctrinal committees.
RESPONSE OF CHURCH IN AFRICA
The church in Africa does not have one voice on homosexuality. It really is split into three camps. You will find those who support homosexuality, for example South Africa. A couple of those who are natural, they neither support or condemn for example Zambia, Zimbabwe, and more are those who condemn for example Nigeria and Kenya
The province of the cathedral of Central Africa that is Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi stand is the fact those people who practice homosexuality aren't setting a good example of what scripture teach and the ones bishops who knowingly ordain them take action unlike the scriptures and teaching of the church. They say it's the responsibility of the church to lead those who deviate from the right coaching of scripture to repentance, and also to assure them of God's forgiveness, wish and dignity. I agree with this statement since it is not all who are in homosexual methods, who are doing because they want to, but some state to be blessed homosexuals plus they need to be helped.
This people have to be presented and helped, matching to Jacques (1976, p. 114) "the threat of repression isn't that it puts a stop to people training their magic formula lusts and perversions but that this avoids them from acknowledging them. " So the easiest way for the church to cope with homosexuality is to recognize that homosexuals is there and they need to be helped.
As for our country Zambia the situation is not really a local one but a communion one. What I mean is that people don't have a homosexual problem as the Anglican Chapel in Zambia at this time; we are involved because our chapel is an internationally church and whichever affects doctrine in one area impacts all. Nevertheless people in Zambia have commented on this issue, for example when Robbinson was consecrated Bishop, the Bishop of Central Diocese Bishop Kamukwamba commented on 12th December, 2003 in an interview in Lusaka, the article that appeared on the site Anglican Evangelical Ministries, that the Bishops in Zambia were contrary to the act because it is not biblical and was unchristian. He said the Anglican Church will not relate itself or support gays. He said, however ties with Anglican churches that attempted to avoid the ordination will be looked after. He said we ought to support and pray for others to avoid further temptations. Another comment came from Bishop Mumbi of Luapula Diocese, just recently, in his capacity as Zambia Anglican Council Chairman explained as quoted inside the Church of England Paper (2010) that but the Western is promoting homosexual lifestyle it is against Religious idea and African beliefs. He says our traditional morality as Zambians have obtained double assault from pressure of the west and from swift breakdown of population credited to urbanization.
From the aforementioned comments from both bishops we can see that the chapel in Zambia will not support homosexuality, but at exactly the same time wants to stay in communion with those who practice and support homosexuality. What they have confidence in is exactly what the bible or scripture train on relationship, for example, (Genesis 1&2) which declares that God planned Man to be committed to a Woman. So following Genesis agreement, those who marry from same gender are obviously sinning.
Christianity also instructs us never to look down or discriminate sinners, this is shown by Jesus's example with the woman trapped in adultery (John 8) he didn't condemn or discriminate her and Jesus went to eat with the taxes collector and sinners ( Matthew 9:9f). People shouldn't be still left in their works of wrongdoing; they should be helped because people who are in sin will be punished. The example is (Genesis 18:20) God punished the location of Gomorrah and Sodom for the same practices like homosexuality, so people should be helped to refrain from such procedures and prayed for as bishop Kamukwamba above advised.
Christianity should be considered a religion which should show a good example of good morals, at the same time love and peacefulness should be proclaimed to everyone irrespective of their sexuality. The chapel is the institution for sinners and no-one should be discriminated.
The problem of homosexuality has been around for time immemorial, and it will remain with us so long as people continue to exist. But as the church we should approach it with caution, with understanding and discussion so that people may achieve our goal as individuals who are geared to result in the kingdom of God. God allows each one of us as we are, so we ought to accept each other even as are. So as the Anglican Church and the Arch bishop Williams want for just how out of this issue, which is threatening to split the church, they must accept and co-exist with the people with homosexual problem in order to help them.
