Analysis of Richard Wright's 'Dark colored Boy'

Black Boy Essay

In Richard Wright's autobiography of Dark Boy, Richard is determined to leave his family to go to the north because they do not provide the necessities for him to be successful. Richard's strong and stubborn personality negates him success. This operates parallel to the misuse and manipulation that Richard receives that limits his human relationships with others around him. Wright also shows how reading frees a spirit suffering from discrimination. The US constitution suggests that "All men are created equal, " however in the Jim Crow legislation era, blacks were always looked down upon. Jim Crow promoted segregation and dehumanization amidst blacks and whites, creating the "wall" that separates whites from blacks. Racial prejudice, hate and discrimination were all over the place; blacks could be punished in any manor, from being arrested and obtaining a beating, to being slain predicated on a white person's view on the action perform by the black individual. Through the entire novel we can easily see Richard's alienation from the white community as well as the black community.

Richard grew up in the south bound by rules and regulations shaped by the whites. Secluded of their own confines of living, their struggle to survive in such a harsh environment seemed infinite and hopeless. Richard needed to take demand when his mother falls ill and must definitely provide on her behalf and the family; disregarding this own health insurance and focusing on keeping up with the rent and bills that would have to be paid. Richard's daddy deserted his family giving him and his expectant mother on their own. Nathan, Richard's dad was a peasant, and a share cropper. He does what the whites commanded him to do, follow the guidelines with no desire to achieve success or progress in life, and duplicate each and every demeaning and menial job daily just to get by. This is the kind of contemporary society which 'trained' Nathan to be the particular whites forced him to be, a flat and dumb individual with no sense of notion of what's actually taking place around him. Being counted as a subspecies, Richard's father was conditioned to have no sense of anticipation, his life time was based upon one thing, and that is falling consistent with all other blacks and practices through with all the current commands given by the white without questions asked. This done every level imaginable, using sheer drive and fear to rip down any sense of desire or positive thinking which blacks acquired. Just the very thought of blacks surpassing a white person was unthinkable. Why is this? It's because it was regarded doing this, it was how the society worked in those days. No-one could question or test what whites could or can't do, all of their thoughts are final. The ideas of being superior amongst the blacks were socially acceptable. Which included dehumanizing and cruel treatments.

Richard wasn't like the other kids which were in the black society. He was more free willed and ambitious. Richard was an independent individual from the start; not getting attached to anyone or in need of assistance of any kind. Richard was fond of education and learning. His search for knowledge looked like, in the other dark-colored people's eye as a waste of time and energy, deemed to be helpful. But in some circumstances, Richard's knowledge gets him in trouble, even worse getting hurt. A good example from the e book, is when Richard must go directly to the store and buy groceries, but gets robbed numerous times by way of a gang of boys. The ultimate time that Richard didn't find the groceries his mom told him, "Don't come in here. . . You just stay right what your location is, I'm going to educate your this night time to operate and fight for yourself. . . Don't you come into this house until you've gotten those groceries. "(pg. 24-25). One of Richard's top qualities was educated that night time by his mother was perseverance.

On the other hands we start to see the opposite, Shorty. Quite simply this amplifies my point to do whatever possible to survive in this dreadful environment. He gets kicked in the gut just to get a quarter. "My ass is challenging and quarters is scarce. "(end of ch12) At what point will a person go to violate self-ethics and morals, and go through with it just to survive. How far are you willing to travel until you break? There is a delicate bond between your white people and white people, as humans we've limitations on how much we can handle mentally and bodily. We can see from this example that Shorty is ready to degrade himself in order to get a one fourth per kick. Shorty and Richard go off on a tangent about how precisely to you shouldn't be dehumanized and take action else. Richard offers to help him but Shorty's hard headedness stops him from to consider heed the information given by Richard. But in Shorty's remarks, he states that he's lazy to do anything and won't change his means of how he makes money. The viewers know that Shorty has accepted the fact of being trapped in the white electricity web of inferiority; he perceives that there surely is no way out of the bad situation.

He went to school for 50 % of his learning, and the half he was self-taught; by reading little bits and pieces he handles to learn quite a bit. Having knowledge and education grants or loans Richard to be ahead of all the other black people. Attempting to be a article writer, Wright pursues his dreams of moving North and writing novels. He takes the task by getting any job they can to raise money for himself to go to the north once and for all, and freeing himself from the clutches of racial prejudice and white guideline. His capability to persevere also led Richard toward his prosperity. Richard was a fighter and regardless of what obstacle he encountered, he handles to knock it down and march forth along with his duties.

Richard was always rebellious, from when he was really young to young adulthood. For example, when the main at Richard's college acquired asked him to give a talk to the audience of whites and blacks, Richard refused to learn the principal's pre-written speech. Simply by reading the principal's conversation he was relieved at the same excessively stressed out. He previously the will and courage that other dark-colored individuals lacked to start forth with this own speech. Richard was willing to leave college without a diploma just because of this unjust action.

The whites understood that Richard was different; they understood that he challenged the "system" and he wasn't worried like all of those other dark people. The visitors can sense dread coming from the whites, scheduled to Richard's attitude to the whites and the restrictions that surround him. The white's try to hide their dread and pressing racism when you are cruel and demeaning towards the entire black population. We can see in the picture where Richard gets a new job at the optical place, and his co-workers mistreat him just because the manager is kind to Richard. Later Richard leaves the job realizing that his co-workers would 'get rid of' him if informed the manager what happed to him. The hostility portrayed by his co-workers was so great that Richard couldn't handle it anymore, and was forced to leave his job.

All of the events mildew Richard into the hardy character he is known for. Wright's intellect was unmatched by the blacks, and well as his rebellious features and do. We were holding a few reasons that he could overcome his qualifications of being dark individual, and learning to be a successful writer. Predicated on the fact that he was smart and indie, and his determination guided him to attain this status, to which all blacks should uphold to. By reading Black colored Guy it becomes clear to the reader how life as a black minority is very difficult.
