Meeting Needs of Children with Incarcerated Mothers

This study was directed to determine whether the basic needs are achieved or not by the kids of incarcerated moms in Welikada prison. This chapter facilitates a talk on the trials and finding relevance to the prior chapter corresponding to the defined hypothesis. Further, facts and information and results will be reviewed and it will also analyse the combination sources to the books reviewed.

As per the planet Bank meaning "Early youth is the most speedy amount of development in a human being life. Although specific children develop at their own speed, all children improvement through an identifiable series of physical, cognitive, and emotional expansion and change. The Early Child Development (ECD) way is based on the undeniable fact that young children act in response best when caregivers use specific techniques designed to encourage and induce progress to another level of development".

Many theorists have developed different concepts on the kid development process, but once analyse those very carefully, it appears that the idea is nearly same that they have tried out to prove. These theorists have reviewed the development of human life in various stages of age ranges, here it is considered only the first youth development up to age 5 years.

Based on the books review, it was analysed the international plan and tendencies in the care and attention of children delivered behind bars. Most of the countries choose the similar process that whenever a pregnant female is imprisoned, she will be transferred to an outside clinic to give the kid birth. This will likely be done to guarantee the appropriate health care and avoid the area of labor and birth place being as jail in the birth certificate. 5. In some countries, just after the child labor and birth, they are separated from mom and kept in foster good care or handed over to their family members. This will adversely be influenced to the children's basic needs in their early on youth development such as breastfeeding, mother's treatment and mother-child relationship and relationship. However, generally in most expresses, the breastfeeding is prompted. Many arguments point out that child should not be segregated from his mom in early stage of a child. In a few of the low income countries, the infant delivery is completed in the jail. This will give amount of health difficulties for both mother and child.

Although a few of facilities are available in the prison environment for the kid living, they aren't directly addressed to the children's mental, psychological and physical development needs. In some prisons like in Cambodia and India, the mothers and children are not provided with adequate and also extra foods for children, clean drinking water, washing and hygiene facilities, etc. Further, the children's usage of play, education, cultural relationship with other children and to the exterior of the jail environment aren't properly addressed. Because of these reasons, the kids of incarcerated mothers face many challenges in their early childhood while living in the jail environment. Therefore, these literatures suggest that children blessed behind the bars are facing many development challenges in their early childhood.

However, some prisons like in Canada and Austria provide well enhance facilities for mothers and child surviving in the prison as compared to the other prisons in the world. Although the enough facilities are provided, the only downside is the relationship of the kids to the exterior world is poor. This may have an impact on to the children's mental, psychological and social development.

This sample study was mainly targeted to the mothers of children blessed behind the pubs in Sri Lankan prisons. Because of the existing limits for carry out this research, this study was restricted only to Welikada prison. During the conduct of study, it was discovered that only there were 16 children mothered to 15 incarcerated women. One woman got two children.

The existing plan for care of mothers and children was extensively analysed in this study. The pregnant mothers are provided maternity health care from outside administration hospitals same as other women and also it helps the children to avoid their birth place as prison in their beginning certificate. Even though nursery facilities are not functioned as external, it helps the children to build up their educational, dialect and cognitive development needs. Further, when the child comes to this 5 years, he'll be separated from the mother and handover to his relatives of placed in foster care. It seems a good signal that child gets a possibility to expose to the exterior society.

The sample review illustrates some positive signs or symptoms related to the survival and life sustaining needs for the kids of incarcerated mothers in Welikada prison. Though the pure water, food, air, cloths and ambiance are satisfactorily dealt with, there is some shortage of cloths, variety of food items and extra foods. The provision of same types of food every day will lead the kids to refuse the foodstuffs. However, these concerns are minimal and probably better when consider the respondents' socio-economic situations in outside the prison. Further, the children are given with breastfeeding and being with mothers throughout the imprisonment before child's time of 5 years. These aspects are favorably powered to the children's physical, mental developments.

The needs for the life embellishing development such as provision of playthings, some fantasy and entertainment activities are not addressed satisfactorily, nonetheless they get enough opportunities to play with other children in the jail premises. However, these activities are restricted to a a definite area inside the jail wall membrane. This restrictive environment hampered the children's opportunities to explore as well as experience a number of stimuli. Hence, these areas do not enhance the developmental opportunities of a kid through the play. This can negatively have an impact on to the children's physical, public and emotional development.

Both the children and mothers are provided with the individual accommodation without merging with other prisoners, but it isn't separated for every single mother and child, everyone is living collectively in one hall showing two toilets amongst them. This impacts to the kid and mother's well-being and hygienic issues and bring about environmental stressors. The toilets and the accommodation areas aren't always placed in very clean. The use of two toilets daily by 16 children and 15 moms is a large concern which children face in the jail premises.

Sleeping facilities for mother and child at Welikada jail is not beneficial for the development small children. It really is depersonalising and depriving. It creates further most severe by the situation that moms and their children are limited to this area for longer period. The impacts of those are reflected in the moms' emotional state and then to the kids.

It seems that though the children and mothers are segregated from other prisoners, the women prisoners get access to children's living area. This will create number of negative effects on children such as expose to their bad behavior and languages. It will obviously become a danger to the security of the children and specifically for their physical development. Further, there could be some psychological influence on children as developing a unusual dread on men because of the children are always interact only with the women prisoners. Alternatively, these children are at a threat of child misuse and intimate harassment by the other prisoners.

The healthcare facilities provided for the mothers and their children are not completely satisfied. The pregnant mothers have to go outside federal government hospitals for treatment centers and baby delivery, but it is also not really a regularly happening. Once the baby delivery is performed, the provision of attention of Midwives for mom and baby will never be available in the jail premises. Further, if someone becomes ill during the night, there is no any medical section to deal with that plus they need to demand prison authority for the layout to take the patient to outside authorities hospital.

Further, the immunization vaccines receive to the children of different age group categories, but the findings realized that they are not setting it up at correct time. Relative to the studies of children's low weight, shortness and deficiency of vitamins are terribly affected to the child development. These indications show that children face many complications during their early on child years development.

The children get enough leisure time and their moms are also not participating any activity other than their children. The available nursery helps children to enhance their educational measurer. The children's usage of independence and thought and information is very low. They have been given one tv set in the hall, but it will not suffice to fulfil the necessity of the kids. Above facts evidently indicate that these children have less likelihood to expose to the exterior world. Hence, this will lead to the chance of negative cultural and academic benefits and unusual fear to external people after they discharge from the prison. Further, they may have opportunities to participate the spiritual activities inside the prison, but no social activities take place. All above factors talked about are directly afflicted to the communal, mental and cognitive development of a kid.

In this aspect, children are benefitted up to certain amount through the jail nursery education. Though they have been tried to develop in this field, children are always exposed to prisoners and their environment. Hence, it is very difficult to reduce them from that particular society system. Finally, this may be resulted to the chance of school failing and get caught in conduct some criminals once they turn out from the prisons.

Mother-child connection and bond may not be took place automatically, but it could develop steadily over enough time which they live together. Within the Sri Lankan jail policy, mothers are permitted to keep their children up to the age of 5 years during their incarceration. It was proved during the sampling review that the attachment existing between moms and children is either troubled or ambivalent. Predicated on the books review and conclusions from all the surveys, it is concluded that the best interest for the kid is never to incarcerate along with his mother.

It is evident a child who continues to be with his incarcerated mother will not have opportunities to create an attachment with the others of his family (especially with daddy), relatives while others in the population. In this regard it could be concluded that the kid who stays with his incarcerated mother is averted and constrained in his sociable development. However, it can be concluded as the jail environment is not favourable to the physical, psychological, social and mental development of a kid.
