Kingston shows her first viewpoint with a protagonist tone when she actually is conversing as her own home, an American; so when she explains to her mythical story and portrays herself as the girl warrior Fa Mu Lan. As the speech of herself, she serves as a protagonist. As the tone of Fa Mu Lan, she actually is simply an observer.

Writing in third person point of view, she discusses her long useless aunt, who may have shamed her family; her mom, Brave Orchid, who says her struggle back China; and her aunt, Moon Orchid, who eventually dies in a mental asylum. In all three of the stories, Kingston functions again simply as an observer showing us the story of three different women.

Throughout the novel, her perspective switches totally from third person, to first person, to third, and back to first person. To be a reader, this effects me greatly so that I might come to understand the storyplot more.


Beginning her novel with the 'No Name Girl', this smooth character remained statistic and was disclosed directly. This aunt of hers was brought up into the history by her mom who advised Kingston that she was a sister of her father's that possessed wiped out herself in the well along with her newborn baby. I believe that she was a spherical persona because in this story she stays quiet about herself being pregnant, telling no one.

In the story of Fa Mu Lan, this character was presented indirectly. At the beginning of this section, you wouldn't have the ability to figure out who was chatting. And along the way, you'd finally note that it was someone else, someone mythical. Fa Mu Lan is a round figure that changes dynamically going from a straightforward girl who confirms herself on the mountain top training to become the strongest girl warrior that influenced many.

Another one of the characters goes by the name of the Daring Orchid. Brave Orchid starts in the publication at age thirty-seven. Brave Orchid is a female with a medical diploma, with 'thick brows' (pg 58), 'lips full' (pg 58), and 'spacy eyes' (pg 58). Her mother is the kind of mother to see many talk-stories as Kingston was growing up.


The Woman Warrior occurs in both China and America. The time differs throughout the novel. Kingston proceeded to go from family past, to centuries back, to her moms past, her childhood past, and lastly to her modern times. In China, the environment is described differently in each one of the stories. These tales differ from taking place in Chinese villages, to a more urban China, and finally, within America.

In the experiences of her long dead aunt, the storyplot is told back their village of Canton, China; same with half the story of Fa Mu Lan. The other half that Fa Mu Lan occurs in is in the mountains and heavens, where Fa Mu Lan does indeed her training. Fa Mu Lan then goes back to China on the battlefield to defeat many of those she has wished to avenge. And Fa Mu Lan's previous visit is to where the Emperor lives so that she can overthrow the Emperor that performed his people wrong. With the report of her mother, it takes place in a more metropolitan area where her mother works with remedies. The story of her aunt, Moon Orchid takes place in the us where she immigrates. Down the road in this account Kingston's mother, Brave Orchid can take her sister to LA, California to confront Moon Orchids husband. And finally, the storyline of herself calls for which place in America. Where Kingston changes her frame of mind because she feels as if these Chinese ethnical behaviours don't suit her because she is in want to become more free like Us citizens.


Above all, Kingston's diction throughout The Female Warrior was very formal.

When showing us about the pain she thought as she had been lower, she didn't simply say 'it damage' she provided details which made us understand she, as Fa Mu Lan, was sense stating that 'It hurt terribly ' the slashes sharp; air burning; the liquor cold, then hot ' pain so carious. ' (pg 35). Kingston uses imagery many times through the e book. Her language can be quite detailed when describing nature itself talking about to us that the 'drinking water was so clear it magnified the fibers in the surfaces of the gourd' (pg 22). She can be flowery when she detailed the actual old people's house appeared as if with 'Ferns and cover from the sun flowers that grew out of one wall, the mountainside itself' (pg 21).

In the book, There is much dialogue going on between one identity and another. Usually it is only an A, B talk. These dialogue voices can vary in different ways from the narrative tone. Some dialogues can be those of she and her mom arguing and the narrators voice could possibly be the one of her more mature do it yourself that has accepted her mother. Usually the dialogue between one character from another wouldn't be so different in this novel; until these were on separate factors of an argument.

Passage #1

'A rock and roll grew in the center of the house, which was their stand. The benches were fallen trees. Ferns and tone flowers grew from the wall structure, the mountainside itself. The old couple tucked me into a foundation just my width. 'Breathe evenly, or you'll lose your balance and fall out, ' said the girl, covering me with a silk handbag stuffed with feathers and natural herbs. 'Opera performers, who start their training at five, sleeping in beds like this. ' Then the two of them went outside, and through the windows I could see them yank on the rope looped over the branch. The rope was tied to the roof covering, and the rooftop opened up just like a basket lid. I'd sleeping with the moon and the actors. I did so not see whether the old people slept, so quickly did I fall off, but they would be there waking me with food in the morning' (pg 21)

Passage #2

One spring morning I got at the job with my tent mending equipment, patching my clothes, and studying maps whenever a tone of voice said, 'Standard, can i visit you in your tent, please?' As if it were my very own home, I did not allow strangers in my tent. And since I had developed no family beside me, no one ever before stopped at inside. Riverbanks, hillsides, the cool slopped rooms under the pine trees ' China provides her troops with achieving places enough. I opened up the tent flap. And there in the sunshine stood my hubby with arms full of wildflowers for me personally. 'You are beautiful, ' he said, and meant it truly. 'I have viewed for you everywhere you go. Kingston design of syntax can be shown through just how she creates her phrases. Her sentences are hardly ever simple and short. Usually they are long, or medium size. Usual sentences range between ten to thirty words per word. Her selection of words is very formal. Rather than declaring 'don't' she separates it and says 'do not'. Her word constructions can have different habits to them for example, 'It damage terribly ' the cuts sharp; mid-air burning; the alcohol cold, then hot ' pain so carious. ' (pg 35). Here she uses dashes and semi colons to add more affect when the reader is scanning this to comprehend her pain more in this quote.

In passage #2, Kingston creates a more calming effect showing how passionate Fa Mu Lan and her man are when they see the other person for the first time in a long time. Her word selections make a big impact on how are you affected through our mind whenever we read this passage. When Kingston had said 'One planting season morning hours' we think of the type, the trees and shrubs and flowers all around and the day air flow. She says that a words, but didn't reveal whose rendering it more dubious at the actual fact that she not only has a visitor, but a visitor that people don't know, that people don't expect. When she tells us that 'no one ever before been to Fa Mu Lan', it gives u more suspicion as to why this visitor wished to speak to her to begin with. Then, when Fa Mu Lan 'exposed the tent flap', 'there in the sun light stood her husband with his forearms load of wildflowers for her' which gives us a sense of happiness they are finally along.

Concrete Information/Imagery

Sight: 'I looked the home, hunting out people for trial. ' (pg 44)

Hearing: 'Noises did not emerge from her mouth area, sobs, chokes, sounds which were almost words. ' (pg 178)

Taste: 'The teapot and the grain pot seemed bottomless, but perhaps not; the old couple ate hardly any except for the peaches. ' (pg 21)

Smell: 'Forbiddingly, I found the smell ' metallic, the iron smell of blood vessels, as whenever a woman gives birth, as at the sacrifice of a big animal as after i menstruated and dreamed red dreams. ' (pg 34)

Touch: 'At its beginning each of them had experienced the same raw pain of parting, a wound that only the family pressing tight could close' (pg 15)

Imagery is important when it brings on greater detail to whatever is happening in the book. It's important because as viewers, it helps us understand the author's perspective more. It helps us feel as if we were there, or we were to share the knowledge with them.


In the star of Fa Mu Lan, the bird that has guided her the mountain symbolizes a lot of things. It can mean that the bird was in a way like her guide through her life, helpful information through the hurdles that were in her life as well. For instance, when she cut her feet and fingers, she still retained following the bird because it was guiding her.

Another way that Kingston used symbols was another parrot to symbolize loss of life. When Kingston says us the storyline of her poor Communist uncle, because he was tricked by the bird when he will try to get a bird after climbing up the tree. The idea of this was to get food for his family and himself. But he failed miserably when guards caught him then his body was left on the tree to rot to frighten the people also to show them what would eventually them.

A different mark would be the use of mountains. Within the novel, mountains were used as a kind of getaway. In Fa Mu Lan, she gets away from her village to a mythical place to become more powerful. In 'Shaman', it was also a getaway for the villagers to escape japan bombings. And the 'Gold Mountain' also known, as America was a fresh beginning for immigrants wanting to leave their country.

Figurative Language

When Kingston's mom, steps to America, she identifies the Americans as 'ghosts'. She tells her children about the problems of white ghosts, which are more scarier than the black spirits because the dark spirits are less sneakier than the white ghosts. Kingston's mother, Daring Orchid, makes up things for her children to beware like the paper ghost, the taxi ghost, the bus son ghost, the coach ghost, and the educator ghost.

Ironic Devices

In the novel, Kingston uses situation irony when she discusses Fa Mu Lan coming home. The day after Fa Mu Lan spends at her home, she actually is asked by her mother to check out her and keep her nightclothes on. She actually is then asked to kneel before her ancestors and take off her shirt. As being a audience I thought that it was odd to kneel before your ancestors one half naked. Throughout the booklet, Kingston maintains the same formal tone. She instructs us about her life, her culture, her experiences that she's had in her life. She stocks tales of her aunt and how she lost her respect for one problem; a myth that she was a part of her life growing up as just a little girl. She told us about her family's have difficulties on their way here to America and their life as well. How well her family been successful, and how bad her family failed.

Other times in her novel, Kingston shows an frame of mind of anger, like when she was striving to make the quiet girl speak but couldn't so Kingston tried out to make her by physical make like 'tugging the locks growing out of her weakened throat' (pg 178) and making the lady cry. Despite the fact that she was crying Kingston still held yelling at her, beating her, anything she could do just to make the peaceful girl talk. But in the end, the girl still never talked.

The shade of love was shown when Kingston referred to the very first time Fa Mu Lan saw her husband. She used imagery like 'one springtime morning' (pg 39) so that we can all picture a crisp day filled with blooms just about everywhere. When she explains to us that her husbands 'arm is full of wildflowers' added more to the firmness. Made us feel touched that he still cared for her and still looked on her behalf after all these years she was gone triaging in the hill with the old visitors to become what she is now.


'You shouldn't be afraid to do anything in your life. '

All the testimonies that Kingston has given us are life lessons. Her long lifeless aunt could've done something about the motherhood. If she recognized she was pregnant, she should've ran away to another village or spoken up if she were raped. She was too worried to really do anything about her baby, so in the end, she committed suicide.

With Fa Mu Lan, she was fearless. She took the chances that she got and trapped to her choice. She forced completely and overthrew the Emperor. On her way in the hill, even though she was getting scrapes and slashes on her hands and ft, she still maintained increasing the mountain, decided to check out the parrot that led her on. She remained with the old people and now she is as strong as ever before. She made her military grow stronger and stronger so then, she could over put the Emperor.

Kingston's objective is to show us that all we should do is follow our dreams and goals in life. If we stick to them like her mother, Fa Mu Lan, and herself, we can live our happily ever after like any talk-story that ends gladly as Fa Mu Lans.

Significance of the Title

The Woman Warrior basically sums up the whole reserve. Because every account that was in this e book was a woman who fought her own challenge, making her a warrior. Some lost women, and some succeeded as life continued. For instance, the long useless aunt handled the fact that villagers arrived to her home and ruin everything. And her aunt that possessed migrated to America handled some other atmosphere here, her lack of her husband to another girl, and her head going crazy.

The women who triumphed in their life fight Fa Mu Lan, Kingston's mother, Daring Orchid, and Kingston herself are women we can research to.
