The most important part of your cover letter is understanding how to catch the recruiter’s eye by fitting your qualifications and experience to the job criteria so this is what we will look at first. The first step that you need to take is to slowly read what the job specifications cover. In fact, this is so important that you need to have this by your side when you write your cover letter. The job specification for this level of job might be two pages long and if you tried to fit everything in in your cover letter this would make it surplus to requirements because we need to keep it concise. Also, as in many of these positions, if you read right through to the bottom of the job specifications, you may well find that it is stated that they don’t expect applicants to fit every aspect of the specification. If in the essential list it says ‘ability to teach English at KS3 and KS4 and in the desirable list it says ‘experience of teaching KS5’, you should write something like:

Teaching English at KS3, KS4 and KS5 at Park Lane Academy for five years has taught me that having extra book groups helps me engage with my pupils and also had led to a 20% rise in A-C grades at GCSE and 15% at A level. This is something that I would continue with and work to develop if I was offered the opportunity to teach at your school.

Can you see how the applicant demonstrates that they have both the essential and desired teaching experience that is required whilst also highlighting how they have helped to make an improvement in exam results? Furthermore, the applicant is suggesting that this is something that they would do for the other school too, if they were offered the position. In this one paragraph, they have:

  • Covered more than a few of the ‘essential’ criteria for the job,
  • Demonstrated that they fill a ‘desirable’ criteria for the job.
  • Flaunted how they may be able to get exam results up for the English Department.
  • Displayed the fact that the applicant has an excellent relationship with their students.
  • Is an excellent team player.
  • Is highly motivated.

Essentially, you need to offer three paragraphs of that ilk to catch the recruiter’s eye. These paragraphs are basically a trailer for your cv. They are demonstrating highlights of all the great things about you that the recruiter can read and then discover more when you are interviewed. By making your cover letter as tempting as possible to the recruiter, you are on your way to getting that wonderful job that you deserve.

As mentioned earlier, when a job applicant has to write a cover letter, the temptation to literally put in everything that is on their cv can be overwhelming. However, you must fight this at all costs. All it will do is make the recruiter believe that you do not know how to write a cover letter and that will sabotage your wonderful job chances. Don’t put in:

  • All your qualifications. For instance, if you are applying for the job as an English teacher but you have qualifications in hairdressing, do not put that in your cover letter. Having a side line cutting hair will not enhance your cover letter.
  • All the jobs that you have worked at. Similarly, if you have had a string of jobs at every fast food chain in the United Kingdom while you were a student, you do not need to put this in your cover letter either.
  • All your hobbies and interests. No matter how fascinating you believe your interest with astrology is or your ability to trapeze, don’t mention it in the cover letter unless it is relevant to the position that you are applying for.
  • Personal relationships. Don’t mention that your auntie Betty works for the company that you are applying for and said that you will fit in nicely. Likewise, don’t mention that you have split up with your partner and that is why you want to leave the place that you are presently working at. Keep it professional.

In this age of texts and emails, it is easy to forget that formal letter writing is still considered de rigueur when applying for a job. Don’t be tempted to just write a quick note as a cover letter, you will definitely not get your cv read.

  • Put your name and address in the top right hand corner.
  • Leave a line space and put the date underneath it.
  • Leave a line space and put the name of the person you are applying to and company address of the company that you hope to be employed by on the left hand side of your A4 format.
  • Leave a line space and then start ‘Dear Mrs Busybody’. If you do not know the name of the person you are writing to, you should simply write ‘Dear Sir or Madam’.
  • The first paragraph should be a direct statement of intent about which job you are applying for. Make it absolutely clear which position it is so that there is no cause for mistake.
  • The next three paragraphs should be demonstrating why you are perfect for the job.
  • The final paragraph needs to display the fact that you have done your research about the company or institute. It will impress the recruiter if you can praise some aspect of the company and then indicate how you can help the company to thrive. Basically, you have to realise that when people apply for jobs they usually talk about themselves. However, when recruiters are looking for future employees, their main interest is simply how you can help the company to thrive. Therefore, if you can point this out, you are on your way to gaining employment.
  • You should close with ‘Yours sincerely,’ if you have addressed the recruiter by name. However, if you have used ‘Dear Sir or Madam’, you need to use ‘Yours faithfully’.
  • Make sure that you have the name and address of the company that you are applying to written correctly. There is nothing worse for looking incompetent than a company name that is incorrect. The same goes for the person that you are writing the letter to. Some people are highly sensitive when their names are gotten wrong. For instance, if the recruiter is called Barker and you write Baker, if this happens a lot, they will not be amused and it could damage your hopes of future employment with the company.
  • Ensure that your self-promoting paragraphs are the very best that they can be. Don’t be happy with your first attempt. Professional writers edit, edit and edit again.
  • Look again at what you have written to suggest that you can make the company thrive – don’t be boastful, be realistic. Does it make you look useful or could you improve upon it?
