You can have the best time of your life while you are a student. However, if you are struggling with writing essays, it could make it less of a fantastic experience for you. Basically, that’s the bad news, the good news is that by simply learning how to use essay connectives, you can improve your writing quickly and easily.
If, at this point, you are not quite sure what essay connectives are, it is simple – they are words that link ideas together so that your writing flows better. These can be used to connect both sentences and paragraphs. Basically, this means that it will be more pleasant for the reader to follow your article or essay because it will flow more. Using essay connectives gives a sense of an essay being one whole piece of writing as opposed to random paragraphs slotted together.

These connectives can be utilised to give more information. Let’s imagine that you are writing an essay on Andrew Marvell’s poem ‘To His Coy Mistress.’ You could write:
“The use of hyperbole in line 13 and 14 where Marvell suggests spending one hundred years to praise his mistress’ eyes indicates a patriarchal view that women are weak and vain. In line 15 and 16 Marvell continues in this vain by suggesting that each breast should be worshipped for two hundred years thus perpetrating his view of his mistress.”
The sample is without connectives and as it stands it is not linked. However, if we put in an adding connective it flows much better.
“The use of hyperbole in line 13 and 14 where Marvell suggests spending one hundred years to praise his mistress’ eyes indicates a patriarchal view that women are weak and vain. Moreover, in line 15 and 16 Marvell continues in this vain by suggesting that each breast should be worshipped for two hundred years thus perpetrating his view of his mistress.”
Can you see how the second sample offers a piece of critical analysis and then signals to the reader by the use of the adding connective ‘moreover’ that there is more information to follow?
Other adding connectives that you might use would be:
