Character Examination Between Oconnors Misfit And Oates Friend English Literature Essay

In looking at and contrasting Flannery O'Connor's "AN EXCELLENT Man is Hard to Find"(1955) and Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where ARE YOU"(1966) the reader will get many similarities and differences between your Misfit in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and Arnold Good friend in "Where WILL YOU BE Going, Where ARE YOU". The paper will check out these two heroes and assess their romantic relationships with each reports' main persona as well as that they reflect certain areas of religions.

In Joyce Carol Oates's storyline "Where ARE YOU CURRENTLY Going, Where Have You Been" Arnold Friend's personality turns up at Connie's place when she actually is all alone, along with his side kick and his golden convertible. At first Arnold attempts to appeal this young gal into getting back in his car, but Connie quickly realizes that Arnold is not the young man she thought he was. She's noticed that his hair seems enjoy it is a wig, that he may be wearing make-up, and that he's walking unusual. Arnold Friend remains to try and smooth conversation Connie into taking a trip with him, however when Connie insists she actually is not interested Arnold becomes more extreme. When Connie says she is going to call the cops Arnold threatens to come inside. After even more of Arnold's soft chat Connie reluctantly agrees to go with him and the storyplot ends.

When comparing the two killers the main one characteristic that appears to stick out the most is that they both seem to be good at what they do. In Oates's history Arnold Friend seems to have a charm about him in the manner that he talks. As we observed in the story his smooth talk seemed to interest Connie, but even though Connie dropped and Arnold's build acquired more violent, Arnold still received what he desired. Although Connie is actually uncomfortable and incredibly adamant on not engaging in Arnold's vehicle throughout his complete persuasion, Arnold still handles to intimidate and coax her to come with him. In O'Connor's report The Misfit's skills were a little less obvious. All in all when The Misfit got right down to business he was very peaceful and even was a gentlemen, apologizing to be shirtless and separating the men and women before these were murdered.

Another statement that may be made confirming additional similarities is that both people are religiously related to their stories. When actively reading between your lines of every account, you can identify each of the author's subtle but still notable undertones that link faith in both reviews. In "Where HAVE YOU BEEN Going, Where ARE YOU" it said that Arnold's shoes didn't fit, and it look as though he had stuffed rags into his boots to make himself look taller than his actually elevation. "He was located in a odd way, leaning back against the car as though he were balancing himself. " Arnold's footwear was also described as appearing to not have even his foot within it. "One of his boots was at a weird angle, as if his feet wasn't in it. It directed left, bent at the ankle. " This could be interpreted that Arnold's shoes didn't fit because he had hooves instead of legs, referring Arnold to be the Devil as it is known that the Devil was thought to have had a pair of hooves that he got extreme measures to hide. It has additionally been noted by previous viewers who have determined religious connotations that if you were to adopt the "R" out of Arnold's first name, his full name would say "An old Friend", this being a mention of the Devil as well who's thought to have been the first being to befriend Adam and Eve upon their creation (Adam). The assumption can be made that Arnold is not a individual because he exhibits characteristics that are unnatural to humans, specifically his eye. His eyes are much brighter than another humans' and produce the image of his sight glowing due to the light illuminating from behind them. "She noticed how pale the skin around his eyes was, like slots which were not in shadow but instead in light. His eyes were like potato chips of broken a glass that capture the light in an amiable way. "

On the other hands "A Good Man is Difficult to find" experienced many religious inserts, but The Misfits actually compares himself directly to Jesus, stating he's like Jesus, except Jesus hadn't devoted a crime. The Misfit is not just murdering people for no reason; he seems to have spiritual or moral reasoning for his killings. The Misfit knows what he's doing is incorrect, but considers it's okay due to morals he feels in. It really is brought to the interest of the audience that this Misfit is in fact quite concerned with religious beliefs and Jesus after the grandmother tries to persuade him to pray and discover his reference to Jesus and free older people woman's life. Much to the shock of the grandmother, but the Misfit hasn't ever before prayed, he has thought deeply about Jesus and even claims, "It had been the same case with Him much like me except He hadn't devoted any crime and they could prove I needed committed one because they had documents on me" signifying he seems there is a lot similarity between him and the Child of God. However, The Misfit then goes on in order to the grandmother in the time preceding her death about his uncertainty in believing whether Jesus ever before actually elevated the deceased. This uncertainty really angers The Misfit, because he just needs to know very well what really occurred. The Misfit seems that he cannot believe that Jesus increased the inactive, because he had not been there to witness it. After stating this disbelief, the assumption can be produced how the Misfit feels that it's his responsibility to judge others and determine their destiny as he does not know if Jesus has performed this judgment. He even declares, "If I had been there I'd of known and I wouldn't be like I am now, " to help expand solidify this assumption. It appears that The Misfit blames Jesus for his actions and even punishments received for his offences committed, causing him to guage those who are living. That is just what The Misfit does indeed with the grandmother and her son's family after finding them after the automobile accident. After having his two lovers eliminate Bailey and his family, The Misfit listens to the grandmother's suggested advice and pleas to endure. Every one of the grandmother's communicating though will not focus on this killer psychologically, and he just finally becomes annoyed with her getting his last nerve when she says he's her "son". The Misfit will take this chance to determine his last common sense of the grandmother and chooses she is not worthwhile living by shooting her three times.

It is simpler to find differences between the two characters because it seemed the key reason why these were doing these offences are different. In Oates's story, Arnold's character seemed to be attracted to younger people, mainly directed to girls. This can be concluded because of Arnold's efforts to make himself appear to be a young man. "Connie liked just how he was dressed up, which was the way all of them outfitted: limited faded jeans stuffed into dark-colored, scuffed boots, a belt that taken his waistline and proved how trim he was, and a white pullover tee shirt that was a little soiled and showed the hard small muscles of his forearms and shoulders(Oates 997). " In O'Connor's report The Misfit appeared to concentrate on certain people. When selecting his subjects he seemed to choose people that he felt where going against his morals. For instance, when The Misfit discovers that the grandmother is not the great "lady" she cases herself to be, it could be concluded as reason behind the murders. This can be backed up by if the Misfits says "She would have been a good girl if it turned out somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (O'Connor 1050), suggesting that he might not exactly have wiped out her if she would have acted like this when he first found the family. A major difference that was also highlighted once their spiritual relations were examined, gives the evident conclusion which the Misfit has been compared to Jesus and Arnold Friend is being set alongside the Devil. These are polar opposites.

The relationship between your getting rid of and the sufferer in both experiences is also an intriguing factor to both experiences. The relationship between the grandmother plus the Misfits sticks out the most. It appears as if they are really completely opposite. On one hand the grandmother considers she is morally superior and the perfect lady. When she is not and is quick to point blame and make assertions about her morals that are not true. Now when you examine The Misfits you can see that he will follow his morals, although they might not be good morals he does indeed sticks by them.

When analyzing the relationship between Arnold Good friend and Connie it could be quickly be chosen that Arnold control buttons this romantic relationship. Arnold does what he will best in the storyplot, talk. When Arnold endeavors to get Connie into his car, it appears as though he knows most of her weaknesses, her appearance, and her family life. In his work he is constantly on the take stabs at those weaknesses. First commenting Connie on her appearance and when that doesn't appear to work starts off to choose at her family life, requesting if they would save her etc, this leading to Connie finally presenting in and going with Arnold Friend. Some visitors may have found this very questionable, Connie providing in and leaving with Arnold Friend, but this is a perfect exemplory case of their relationship. Right from the start of the storyline Connie appeared to flourish for attention and Arnold was presenting her just what see required, it just had taken some of his smooth chatting and picking at her weaknesses to get Connie to finally give in.

In conclusion, when you compare and contrasting Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and Joyce Carol Oates's "Where ARE YOU CURRENTLY Going, Where ARE YOU" the reader can find many similarities and distinctions between your Misfit in "A Good Man is Difficult to find" and Arnold Good friend in "Where HAVE YOU BEEN Going, Where Have You Been". The Misfit and Arnold Friend both became effective authoritative predators in persuading their victims to follow their directives which finally lead to their unfortunate fatalities and abduction. Both characters in each of these short tales also exhibited insinuated spiritual implications that related them mainly to two major characters in religion, Jesus and the Devil. After inspecting The Misfit and Arnold's romantic relationship with their respective main people, many dissimilarities were also noted that segregated them as individual manipulators that every performed their own responsibilities to get what they desired. The paper required a look at these two personas and examined their romantic relationships with each experiences' main character as well as that they reflected certain areas of religions.

Writing Process

The following brief essay supplies the process I had taken to write my newspaper on looking at and contrasting Flannery O'Connor's "AN EXCELLENT Man is Hard to Find" and Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where ARE YOU" to find similarities and differences between your Misfit in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and Arnold Good friend in "Where WILL YOU BE Going, Where Have You Been".

The first step to my writing process started out with the choosing of my theme. This task was probably the easiest step in my writing process. I already understood I wanted to create about Joyce Carol Oates's "Where ARE YOU CURRENTLY Going, Where Have You Been", because out of the stories we've read so far this one trapped my attention the most. Then when I saw this issue list and this issue looking at and contrasting The Misfit and Arnold Friend I understood this had to be my subject.

Following the first step of picking a topic, emerged my second step to my writing process and this being my brainstorming process. Since I noticed there was too much to be said on this topic I noticed a free write was the best way to get me began.

In the third step I began to write my newspaper. After free writing for almost three internet pages I started out my paper. This was done simply by revising my free write and added the mandatory information make my newspaper complete.

Finally with having a complete newspaper I required my paper to the writer's workshop to have it revised by others. From here I just took my tips from the workshop and put the final touches on my newspaper.

After the completing the first paper it was time to start out my writing process again. The second part of the paper was just an addition to the first part. So instead of find a new topic everything that would have to be done was find some addition home elevators my topic and add at least two more internet pages to my paper.

The writing process for part two commenced with the revision of my first paper. First I checked for common mistakes like grammar and set those before I forgot to. Then I was a chance to see that which was needed to add depth and duration to my paper. After reading though my paper I saw which i spent the majority of my paper talking about Arnold Friend which means this was known. Next I noticed that I could organize my paper just a little better which means this was also known.

With both of these ideas noted I could start researching again to find even more information. I started by trying to find more information that may be used to provide me more to state about The Misfit. There was not much converse of The Misfit online therefore i decided to read the story again and make an effort to focus in and discover parts that revolved around religion. I did so the same with Arnold Good friend also to my surprise there is a lot of information on him. But this information was not very helpful; the bulk of the info was found in forums and incredibly opinionated and did not seem believable. With this thought I decided not to use any of these details and do as I did so for The Misfit and re-read the storyline to try and find more info that would give attention to religion.

Finally after re-reading the reports it was time to include the addition information. This is done by focusing on adding more depth to the matters which were already there and adding new thoughts in to the paper. The changes that where made added in regards to a page and a half, but because of my organization issues I explained earlier my total came to six pages rather than six. 5. Also since of most of my information revolved around comparing faith I decided it would be good for change my thesis declaration to add this.
