Cultural Sensitivity And Mental Health Clients Medical Essay

Every country, contest, ethnic group or modern culture has its own culture. Since it is, every culture is different from the other; this difference is mirrored in the manner way of life are completed and in the manner the society expects visitors to live their lives. Since the world over is becoming global, we ought to know how ethnic level of sensitivity and competence affects those who we interact with. Basing on my social assessment, this paper evidently shows how cultural level of sensitivity and competence effects the health care of mental health clients and the possible hazards or protective factors due to my cultural assessment. All the results presented here derive from the cultural diagnosis which entails background of my ethnical group, ideals orientation, social sanctions and restrictions, medical believes and methods and my spiritual affiliation.

According to Flaskerud (2007) Cultural awareness means respecting the methods, the norms and the beliefs of other folks. It is defined by; as an individual knowing your own ethnical practices and values and by not judging other folks whose culture differs from yours and by treating them with admiration. As specialists in the health industry, we have to have overall flexibility and skill when dealing with those people who have different ethnical backgrounds in order to succeed in undertaking our duties inside our profession.

Also according to Flaskerud (2007) Cultural competence is defined as the policies, manners and behaviour that are in an firm or among individuals who are of the same profession and make sure they are interact in cross cultural environment. To a person, it is the ability to utilize competence within an environment of diverse civilizations.

The two: cultural competence and ethnic sensitivity are extremely vital in mental health; to a mental health and or a psychiatric nurse it will help them achieve success in caring and treating mental ill patients no matter their cultural backdrop. According to Dish (2007) good communication between the nurses and the psychologically unwell patients is improved by having cultural competence and ethnical sensitivity. That is so because, in most cases the patients might not understand the terms spoken by the nurses which hinders the success of psychiatric assessment where it's important to understand what's being communicated. Being truly a culturally sensitive nurse, you will notice the importance of having an interpreter who'll make things possible for both gatherings as all needed will be communicated and acquired.

Having social competence and ethnic sensitivity, assists with determining the right kind of approach to the patients. Corresponding to Bowl (2007) throughout a psychiatric evaluation, the nurse or a health care provider prepares a set of questions or duties to be implemented to the patient. It'll be inappropriate to ask you to definitely execute a simple subtracting and adding ensure that you yet there are from history that will not go to school.

As a mental health/psychiatric nurse, having social competence and ethnic sensitivity helps one understand and value the patients' needs. According to Bowl (2007) there is a very big need to comprehend and appreciate the patients' faith. It'll be in appropriate to share all patients to visit the hospital chapel and pray. It'll sound well to Christians but to the Muslim or Hindus will be like an insult. The nurses also needs to know and value the patients need to pray often a day. Bowl (2007) also known that some nurses interpreted such as obsession and in the true sense it's what their religion demands.

Hygiene is important to everyone. Having ethnic competence and ethnical level of sensitivity, helps nurses understand the needs of health for different patients. According to Dish (2007) in some cultural backgrounds, it is a norm to use bowls or containers to clean themselves either after browsing the toilets or maybe as a setting of bathing, in a few medical center it was observed that, this is seen as undesirable and it was discouraged, this made them feel offended and some choose never to cooperate.

Having cultural competence and cultural sensitivity, enables nurses provide enough good care and love to the patients and help them bridge a difference still left by the patients' loved ones or family. According to Bowl (2007) in a few cultures mentally ill people are neglected by their families plus they lack mental support. As a nurse or medical workers, being aware of the way the patients are cared for by their people will enable you provide them with the care they may be missing which makes them feel important and makes them ready to cooperate.

The findings from my ethnic examination may impact just how I care for my clients in mental health setting in the following ways: being an urban Filipino, I will think it is hard to execute a full psychiatric assessment without the help of an interpreter when am faced with patients whose dialect I don't understand. I grew up in the city I am exposed to Filipino and English which I know and understand.

In my culture, the emotionally ill are seen as a shame to the whole family and they are not highly valued. With this mentality, it might not be easy for me to readily connect to the patients as I am going to not be planning on anything serious in terms of talk with them.

My cultural limitations and sanctions might also influence just how I view and care for the mentally ill; since the majority of them have psychological distress, if indeed they withdraw from other people I might fail to make them connect to people since my culture has made me view this as a normal reaction for individuals in such situation.

Most people in my own culture associate mental health problems with spirits and supernatural works; during my interaction with the patients, I will say prayers to shun the spirits from attacking me during my look after the patients. But since I have found that mental health issues has a cause that can be scientifically explained I am going to try in so far as i can not to be bound by any other mode of treatment aside from medical methods.

My findings from my ethnic assessment are protecting factors. From assessment, I have summarized my social goals and norms and this has empowered me appreciate other ethnicities. I am now aware that individuals are different and as I'd like my culture to be respected I now know that others also want theirs to be well known. For example being an urban Filipino, I am going to know I am not the same as those from rural areas and I will expect them to behave and discuss differently, I won't let the variety put a bias on the way we are going to relate to one another.

From the evaluation I have learned that mentally unwell people behave in a different way and are seen as shame to the culture, as a health care giver, this should make me step in and present them the good care they lack, and this might cement my romance with them and protect us from conflicting or miss understanding one another.

Expectations of my religion will vary from another religion's; this can make me appreciate beliefs of patients from a different religious affiliation which will protect us from participating in unnecessary disagreements involving either: times or places of prayer in a hospital premises. In my culture it's essentially expected that medical workers should take care and really help those people who have been brought to the hospital for medical care. To be able to defend and protect the name of my occupation, I will make an effort to help the patients so that a noteworthy change will be seen.

In finish, there are so many ethnicities, and each culture differs; cultural sensitivity and competence are skills that needs to be acquired and applied by those in medical setting up and especially, mental/psychiatric setting up. As known, mental unwell patients should be looked at with esteem and given the health care they need. Their way of life should be respected and preserved. As health staff, we should learn from our cultures; how we want to be treated and seen regarding our ethnicities, ought to be the same manner we view and think about other people's cultures.
