Hidden Symbolism In Lord OF THIS Flies English Literature Essay

Symbolism plays an essential roll in experiences. It generates abstract ideas and deeper meanings out of simple things or people, turning stories into a lot more complex pieces of literature. In Lord of the Flies, several are located, making the storyplot mean different things to each individual according to their own point of view and understandings. Lord of the Flies obviously has a deeper so this means into it, and the items as well as folks are not as simple as they seem to be. Three symbols that stand out and play an important part in the story are the mark of the beastie as concern with the unidentified, the conch shell as order and democracy, and the pig brain (Lord of the Flies) as the devil and evil.

Although the youngsters on the island were terrified of the beastie, it was only a product with their imagination. Fear itself, in cases like this, was the beast that haunted their thoughts and dreams. The beastie is a symbol for concern with the unknown, because the boys were reluctant of what they thought was a terrifying monster that can harm them, but little do they know the true monster lived included. Simon had the theory that this beast was a mental one, not really a physical one as the kids claimed to have observed. "What I mean ismaybe it's only us" (Golding 89), he mentioned. Many of their statements were vague, therefore Simon realized that had to imply that the beast was probably just an over exaggeration using their part. "The thing is - dread can't damage you anymore than a goal" (Golding 82), Jack said while looking to relaxed everyone down. He was right, fear is alarming and terrifying, but it can't harmed you greater than a fantasy or a thought can. The beast, in cases like this, was something that everyone was scared of, like the bigguns. It influenced their activities and thoughts, but given that they had no confirmation that it been around, they only acquired their dread to haunt them. We as humans are frightened of things that people can't, but do sense. This fear is quite strong and it can mildew our personalities and control our actions, the same way it happened in Lord of the Flies.

This fear that drove everyone to insanity and craziness induced disorder amongst the kids, but there was one thing that helped keep this under control. This subject was the conch shell. The conch shell was important for order, since it called everyone for meetings and gave the person positioning it the right to talk. This subject was often considered aside. This is why the conch shell symbolizes order and democracy. "We are able to utilize this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us" (Golding 16), Piggy declared. This declaration is pretty right to the idea. It shows how one blow will call, bring, and organize people in the island, and so create order amongst them. Besides this, the conch shell grants the to speak whenever it is placed. This is democracy, since it lets each person speak while everyone listens and have their ideas noticed. "I'll supply the conch to another person to speak. He can hold it when he's speakingand he will not be interrupted, except by me" (Golding 33), Ralph described. This clearly amounts up the use of this conch. Whoever wields it, speaks. The rest may stay silent and pay attention. Throughout the tale, these guidelines were often ignored; everyone wished to be heard, however when chaos got over their discussions, all the opinions and ideas were just very soft whispers in the center of screams. They often times forgot the use of the conch shell, that was to discuss issues within an orderly way and that all idea and view was heard plainly. This, in a way, resembles the story of "The Golden Kite". Two towns were struggling and having useless discussions, however the emperor's daughter end the chaos by purchasing both towns to interact to be of equivalent importance. The emperor's girl is similar to the conch shell. She places and end to the combat and chaos between both towns, which are the boys in The Lord of the Flies. Then, she sets order in to the towns making them both of similar importance (the towns were both equal and everything the kids were noticed).

Discussions and fear gradually drove everyone crazy, and each one found evil within themselves. Simon found a pig brain with evil thoughts and terrifying comments, which released evil into his head, although he deducted that it was all in his mind. This pig brain, later known as "god, the father of the Flies, " is a definite mark for the devil and evil. By the evil way it talked, it acquired no good motives. "There is not one to help you. Only me. And I'm the BeastLuxury considering the Beast was something you might hunt and kill!. . . You knew, did you not? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the key reason why it's no go? Why things are the way they may be?"(Golding 143), said god, the father of the Flies. Just like the Devil, it convinced Simon that it was part of him. The Devil is a person who lies to people making them think that he is the one the one that can save them and they are all together. As the Lord of the Flies said, "My poor misguided child, do you think you know better than I do?"(Golding 143), it wishes to create fear within Simon, appropriate into his brain the actual fact that he's too weak which his degree of intellect is nowhere near his'. This is clearly only something of evil, and since the devil is the ruler of evil, god, the father of the Flies must be the sign of the devil/evil. It really is trying to strike Simon in his weakest areas, which is one of the devil's attributes. It isn't clear whether this chatting pig was part of Simon's tortured brain or whether it is completely true, even though Simon realizes it is all in each one's brain. Either way, it symbolizes the devil since its intentions are not whatsoever good and all it does is chat and make dangerous comments. Taking all this in mind, the story "The Scarlet Ibis" can be closely identified with The Lord Of this Flies. Doodle, the primary character in the "The Scarlet Ibis" was emotionally challenged and population viewed down on him because of this. Doodle was considered a vulnerable, dumb rather than important. This is what the Lord of the Flies have with Simon. It was revealing to Simon how worthless and insignificant he was in comparison to him. The pig head could resemble population in this case, with unproductive comments and evil thoughts and ideas. The pig brain was clearly evil, and it demonstrates the attitude of the devil.

The mark of the beastie as concern with the mysterious, the conch shell as order and democracy and the pig brain as the devil play important parts in the story, since it clarifies these with deeper meanings. Symbolism in general makes testimonies more significant and complex. It takes simple ideas and occurrences to are a symbol of something else therefore explain the true meaning and roll of that specific subject or person. The symbolism in Lord of the Flies, especially, changes the complete outlook of the storyline when the symbolism is well known. Identifying simple things or people with elaborate meanings can make readers understand the story better, even with their own viewpoint and understandings of the storyline. Without symbolism, experiences could have a dull and therefore would only are a symbol of itself, somewhat than for more technical ideas.
