Its The Beauty Pageants Marketing Essay

By definition, the beauty pageant is a competition in which young women are judged by physical appearance alone. As the old stating goes, "beauty is at the eye of the beholder. " Beauty, as determined by a -panel of judges (the beholders), means that a person who is considered appealing to one person might not exactly necessarily appeal to some other, and it allows judges to create the standard of what is beautiful or not. If this was a perfect world, maybe everyone would follow the sensible words of this old saying and acknowledge that assessing beauty is only a matter of personal flavour and contemporary specifications and developments. However, contemporary society often turns every aspect of someone's life into a competition. The wonder pageant could very well be one competition world could do without.

Beauty pageants are an unneeded entertainment of population because they establish unrealistic beauty specifications for an audience of easily inspired young women, they encourage judging someone's worth predicated on appearance only, somewhat than on someone's character, plus they objectify young women. In the world of beauty pageants, there is merely one kind of beauty. This one kind of beauty is "Barbie": large, long-legged, tiny waistline, straight pearly white teeth, long thick hair. These beauty pageants can be misleading and dangerous, not and then women without this body type, but to world as a whole. The standard that beauty pageants shoot for is no all-encompassing idea of beauty, but one that is shallow and appears only at a woman's physical appearance. Beauty pageant organizers have striven for a long time to ensure that contestants own an opportunity to show their skills before they may be crowned a "beauty queen", however the reality is that a woman not fitting the physical standards of beauty competition would never be looked at to enter a competition.

Beauty pageants promote the theory that looks are more advanced than a person's ability, feelings and center. These young women are judged only on the basis of physical appearance. The talent element of competition just does not have much weight due to the fact an "ugly" person (somebody who doesn't have a body fitted with the accepted requirements of that time period) could never get a competition, and often would not remain competitive at all. Judging young women mainly on the looks calls for important character trends out of concentration because other attributes, such as brains, are not viewed as part of ideal femininity and therefore not as what to which women should aspire.

Miss USA 2002 went to a large, blonde Texas girl who received the audience when she mentioned that education was important and that you can inform if someone has an education by looking at them (Cornforth, 1). Perhaps her objective was to market the value of education, however the declaration instead implied that important identity traits and brains can be summed up by a glance. ("Don't evaluate a booklet by its cover, " to utilize another familiar expression. )

Young women are judged mainly on the physical appearance, while their personal features and talents are not judged. Beauty pageants include quizzes where the contestants show "their cleverness" by answering questions that are actually just presentations of sticking with the cultural norms of that time period. These questions are always very easy, broad questions relating current issues such as healthcare, gay marriage, and abortion. The contestants are discouraged from answering in a way that demonstrates their own private opinions; if a girl is on the stage being assessed by a panel of liberal judges before a liberal audience, she'd never speak against gay marriage or abortion, but would supply the answer that would probably please the masses. In this manner, she is only learning to supply the "popular" answer and not review what her own beliefs are, and then figure out how to defend those beliefs.

Beauty pageants are misleading to young women. Hardly any women are created with a body that suits the existing standard of beauty. A majority of young women don't have a body which adheres to the present social standard of that time period. These young women have a tendency to be viewed as "plain" but they can clean up and appearance beautiful however they cannot stand the pressure. After enjoying beauty pageants, "plain" young women often lower their self-confidence (these young women don't do this on purpose) and some young women then try to make themselves look more attractive. Besides, for beauty pageants winners, their "success" often offers them the need to do after ward is to maintain and improve their physical beauty (physical body), and therefore many no longer surpass further education or other ways of professional development.

Beauty pageants highly promote the negative aspect that young women have emerged as items of sexual interest. These contests fail to challenge harmful political attitudes to young women. They certainly nothing to assist the liberation of young women. By promoting looks as the most important feminine quality, they harm young women's liberation in general. Within the 17th of February the Campus Country wide Organization for ladies protested the Miss MAO Beauty Pageant (Gats, 1). They passed out four-hundred protest flyers which explained their disgust with Florida Blue Key and the College or university of Florida for positioning a sexist pageant where women must be "checked out" in swimsuits and parade themselves in skin-tight night gowns to become awarded scholarship money. (Gats, 1) In this manner, beauty pageants encourage young women to see and promote themselves as an subject (just like a car) to be judged by men. Beauty pageants harm young women by treating them as objects held up to a tight standard of "beauty, " a standard that is painful, time consuming, and expensive for young women to try to achieve.

Beauty pageants can be misleading with young women lower their personal specifications of sexuality. At what years is it suitable for a young girl to be called "sexy"? Young women have a huge role model role in a little girl. Girls look up to these young women because they're beautiful, if these young women are wearing immodest clothes to be captivating, then these little girls would want to do the same. These girls shouldn't be worried about looking to be sexy, they should enjoy a healthy youth as women who are growing talents and interests and whose worth is examined by their poise, cleverness, effort, kindness, and sophistication.

Beauty pageants are well advertised by the marketing with television set and images, which affect young women's viewpoints on appearance. The members of these pageants are poor role models for these young women as they established a typical for an almost bad bodyweight, unrealistic breast size, and perfect complexion standards. Only a little minority of women can realistically achieve this "ideal" feminine body. The advertising pressures all young women to conform which can encourage unsafe diets and eating disorders, tanning, plastic surgery, and to keep attempting to achieve unrealistic, non permanent goals that frequently have irreversible damages. Articles, entitled "Thoughts about Neglect Young USA, " out of a local American journal was compiled by a young women young in 2005, who acquired just observed 'Miss Teenager' on NBC. Her summary of the wonder pageant was; "White teeth. White teeth. Prom-style dress. Blonde. White teeth. Blonde. Chandelier earrings. Tan. Blonde. Tan. Strapless dress. " followed by, "That's all you have to to learn" (Callow, 1). The declaration created by this young women teenager is not the one which is from a minority. She actually is one of thousands that view this as the "norm" for a woman of beauty. It isn't healthy or genuine for a young woman to believe there may be one type of beauty or one type of accepted body. It is harmful and may lead to both physical and psychological damage. The mass media has so many influences of young women; they wish to be as perfect as the beauty queen on tv, journals, and internet. These young women will do anything it requires to become another beauty queen, even it triggers them to be on diets or get plastic surgery.

In a high percentage of Hollywood films, even those where the young woman should be portrayed as a strong willed, unbiased heroine, usually feature young women being performed off as gender items. Though there is nothing at all wrong with a female being labeled as "sexy, " it will not be the main focus. One manufactured from uniqueness, intelligence and charm is what should be advertised. Videos such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Charlies Angels send the same note to young woman that beauty pageants do, which is that only 1 kind of body is acceptable. That is harmful to most young women as beauty pageants are motivating men to treat them as an subject alternatively than young women with thoughts and uniqueness.

Joel Yager, M. D. writes: "Every modern culture has a way of torturing its women, whether by binding their ft or by sticking them into whalebone corsets. What contemporary American culture has produce is designer denims. " (94).

With mass media pressuring young women to be slender and a huge amount of money spent towards diets, higher rates of eating disorders in the population are growing (Gats, 2). Many beauty pageant contestants have problems with some form of eating disorder. Anorexia (starvation to loose weight) and bulimia (binge eating) will be the two main eating disorders. Young women who have problems with anorexia have worries of being excess fat so severe that they starve themselves to weight reduction, often leading to loss of life (Gats, 2). Even when anorexic young women are thin, they think of themselves too excessive fat. A low self-confidence causes them to dread even taking a small amount of food. Bulimia is binge eating that following a design such as, eating compulsively and then throwing it up. After having a binge young women eats, they make an effort to control themselves by throwing up their food through vomiting. Young women have extreme habits of both eating and performing exercises. Ultimately, beauty pageants should be healthy role models, but this is not the truth.

To be beautiful in the world means a young woman never feels reasonable about herself, she actually is always adding herself down. If a female will not see her body as suitable, she will often be powered to change it, and these changes tend to be drastic. Plastic surgery can be used to change any body part: the breasts, lip area, thighs, and stomach are among the most popular. Cosmetic surgery can be especially bad for adolescents. Whenever a young women have cosmetic surgery done at such a early age, the risk for diseases such as breasts cancer are extremely high. Many young women are trying to look their best, and they believe that plastic surgery is the only path to go. They do not stop to think about the long-term effects of the surgery. They want instant results, meaning that they will often pay thousands of dollars to alter body that had nothing wrong them to begin with.

The promotion of this sole standard of physical beauty is harmful to women everywhere because it discourages women to love the body they are delivered with. The simple and realistic simple truth is that there are some physical aspects of someone's body that are impossible to change, and promoting the high, slim, "supermodel" amount being the only accepted body type excludes different styles.

Every year several million people are identified as having skin cancer in america. Despite this reality, hundreds of thousands of people routinely visit tanning salons (Cornforth, 1). Tanning beds generally produce 93% to 99% UVA rays (Cornforth, 1). That is 3 x the UVA rays given off by the sun! Over time, the consequences of too much UVA exposure can lead to various problems such as eyes damage, disease fighting capability changes, wrinkles and premature aging of your skin, and skin malignancies. The most common malignancy is malignant melanoma, it's the deadliest form and its own degree is chiseled out rising in young women under 40 (Cornforth, 1).

Beauty pageants are an unnecessary element in population because they establish unrealistic beauty expectations for an audience. A couple of beauty pageants out there which attempt to create a wisdom of well-balanced young women. These sorts of competitions want to promote the intelligence mixed with beauty side, which should be intensely commended. However, beauty pageants where beauty is emphasized as a solitary basis for being successful are dangerous and bad for society.

Young women are delicate, as they look for a location for themselves in this world. When someone views the pain of a women struggling with eating disorders, hears a women beg to persuade her parents to permit her to get plastic surgery because they can not stand a certain part with their body, it could be concluded that beauty pageants do a great disservice to the winners, the losers, and all children. Personal anticipation would be an organization such as to find a much better way to lift up up the nature in our young women.
