The purpose of this demonstration is to demonstrate that the male individuals in the novel SUNLIGHT Also Rises are insecure, in their struggle to be viewed as content and pleased with their life. Insecurity is a common feeling among men after World War I, and the male individuals in The Sun Also Increases are insecure not only as a result of war, but also as men, falling to their legs in front of the female identity - Brett (Lady Ashley).
- the male group insecurity is suggested even right from the start, in the epigraph and also in Chapter II. Traditional notions of what it designed to be considered a man were undermined by the realities of the conflict. In Chapter II, Robert Cohn verbalizes the dilemma of the Lost Generation, which is the feeling that life does not have any purpose or chemical.

[Cohn:] "I can't stand it to think my life is going so fast and I'm not really living it. "
[Jake:] "Nobody ever lives their life completely up except bull-fighters. "
- the male characters from the novel, aside from Romero, despite their love for Brett, they may be feeling at the same time insecure before her "manliness". Even Brett telephone calls herself a "chap". Their insecurity towards Brett makes them discuss bad about her, like Jake and Robert Cohn do.
" 'She is a drunk, ' I said. 'She is deeply in love with Mike Campbell, and she'll marry him. He'll be abundant as hell some day. ' 'I don't consider she'll ever before marry him. ' 'Why not?' 'I have no idea. I simply don't consider it. Have you known her a long time?' 'Yes, ' I said. 'She was a V. A. D. in a clinic I was in through the battle. ' 'She will need to have been just a youngster then. ' 'She's thirty four now. ' 'When do she marry Ashley?' 'During the conflict. Her own true love possessed just kicked off with the dysentery. ' 'You talk type of bitter. ' 'Sorry I did not signify to. I had been just trying to give you the facts. ' 'I don't believe she'd marry anybody she didn't love. ' 'Well, ' I said, 'She's done it double. ' 'I don't imagine it. ' 'Well, ' I said, don't ask me a lot of fool questions if you don't like the answers. ' 'I didn't ask you that. ' 'You asked me what I understood about Brett Ashley. ' 'I didn't ask you to insult her. ' 'Oh, go to hell. '"
- the inability of communication renders to insecurity and everything type of problems. The conversations between the male characters are lacking depth, and their only goal seems to be making bad jokes one about another. For instance, Mike is hiding jealousy and insecurity by emphasizing Robert's, with a joke.
[Mike:] "Robert, reveal quickly what you'd rather do than anything?"
[Cohn:] "I have no idea. "
[Mike:] "Oh, don't believe; just bring it right out. "
[Cohn:] "I think I'd alternatively play football using what I understand about managing myself now. "
[Mike:] "I got wrong about you. You are not a moron. You're only a case of caught development!"
[Cohn:] "Someday a person will push that person in. Anyway, minimize it out about me. "
- the loss Jake Barnes suffers during the warfare is another part of the male insecurity. The conflict renders his manhood unproductive because of accident. He carries the burden of sensing that he is, as he says, "less of a man". He cannot get away the sense of inadequacy scheduled to his impotence, sense which is deepened by Brett's refusal to enter a romantic relationship with him.
[Jake:] "Couldn't we live alongside one another, Brett? Couldn't we just live together?"
[Brett:] "I don't think so. I'd just tromper you with everybody. "
- Jake Barnes' insecurity is born also from the fact that he hasn't a "true to life". He rejects the American worth in order to find the " fake Western benchmarks" and he will not follow his job.
[Invoice:] "You know very well what you are? You're an expatriate. Why don't you live in New York? Nobody that ever left their own country ever before wrote anything worthy of printing. Not even in the magazines. . . You're an expatriate. You've lost touch with the land. You get cherished. Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed by love-making. You spend all of your time talking, no longer working. You are an expatriate, see? You hang around cafes"
[Jake:] "It appears like a swell life, when do I work?"
[Expenses:] "You don't work. One group says women support you. Another group claims you're impotent. "
[Jake:] "No, I simply had a major accident. "
- Jake masks his insecurity by behaving like he's happy of the nice life he says he leads.
"Enjoying living was understanding how to get the money's worthwhile and knowing when you'd it"
- competitiveness, resentment and insecurity, both Jake's and Robert's, are easily remarked in the brief biographical information Jake makes to Robert. Jake's hostile and skeptical frame of mind toward Cohn's insecurities is bound up with jealousies and insecurities of his own.
"Robert Cohn was once middleweight boxing champ of Princeton. Usually do not think that I am quite definitely impressed by that as a boxing subject, but it meant a lot to Cohn. He cared little or nothing for boxing, in reality he disliked it, but he discovered it painfully and thoroughly to counteract the feeling of inferiority and shyness he previously sensed on being cared for as a Jew at Princeton. "
In summary, the personas in E. Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises are showing up to be something different than what they truly are. They want others to view only their mask, to believe in their performing. However, every single one of the character types in the novel is fighting it all in order to keep their position in a global changed by the war.
