The care of a patient's mouth area forms an important component of assisting hygiene needs yet is an aspect of practice which is not always afforded the attention it fully deserves. Additionally it is a job which all too often delegated to healthcare assistants.
Research shows that, in the United States, nosocomial pneumonia ranks second in morbidity and first in mortality among nosocomial microbe infections. The treatment of nosocomial pneumonia offers 5 to seven days to a healthcare facility stay of making it through patients and billions of us dollars to healthcare costs.
REFLECTION
There are different models of representation one which is Gibbs (1988). Reflection is the process of reviewing an experience in order to describe, analyses, evaluate and so inform studying practice (Reid1993).
I use this representation model in guiding me since it has helped concentrating on different aspects of an experience, and exploiting their full potential for learning could be more appreciated.
Reflection in professional practice, however, gives back again not what it is, but what might be, an improvement on the original (Moon 1999).
Description
As part of placement simulation, I got part of a group introduced to dental hygiene care. It is one of the main requirements in maintaining the hygiene needs of an individual. When we were told to bring in a towel and tooth brush, I used to be taken aback in regards to what was the necessity to them?
I went to the multi-skills lab not knowing exactly what will befall me. My lecturer presented us to a variety of chemicals for dental hygiene. I needed used some before but on this occasion, there is one I had not tried and used before. I used to be given a colleague to get the ability of exceptional giving and obtaining of oral cleanliness by cleaning his tooth with toothbrush and pepsodent and vice versa. We performed as instructed.
Feelings
Upon commencement of activity, my views of healthy dental care were not very clear if you ask me. Generally I recognized cleaning your pearly whites to be much like cleansing a face. I felt very ashamed and inadequate and consequently, felt very uncomfortable as I've not done this to anyone beyond my children. On his part, it was evident from his response that he previously no self-confidence in me, pondering I would brush his pearly whites hard. It highlighted the intricate problems I have to solve used and the provision of health care needs to patients for whom I might not have had connection with before. I thought my pride and dignity had been recinded from me but later noticed comfortable having comprehended what it was generally.
Critical Analysis
Helping patients/service users to meet their hygiene needs is a fundamental component of medical care. Again, helping patients to meet their personal cleanliness needs provides any nurse with a great opportunity to carry out a thorough physical, psychological and cognitive diagnosis of the individual.
Although it seemed difficult at the beginning, by the time we performed on the other person for the 3rd time with encouragement we'd developed a good working relationship.
Encouraging students to recognize their intuitive capacity helps them to understand their advantages and weaknesses (SWOT). Jasper (2003) regards SWOT evaluation as learning yourself. The knowledge of our skills and talents and the knowing of where our boundaries lie is seen as essential to being able to act as a professional practitioner. After determining and examining of my very own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and dangers, I showed forget about discomfort and shown more fascination with the activity as our lecturer sustained spoken us through. Jackson and Mannix (2001) note that amount of interest the nurse shows in the learning needs of the pupil and the main element role she or he performs in their success are crucial to the student's development.
It is unusual that sometimes you need to do things or know what things are without ever before really halting and analysing it. Most students and many professionals remember that learning bought from positioning experience is a lot more meaningful and relevant than that bought in the lecture room (Quinn 2000).
Boud et al 1985 claim: "it is common for representation to be treated as though it were an intellectual exercise - a simple matter of thinking rigorously. However, reflection is not exclusively a cognitive process; feelings are central to all or any learning. "
Conclusion
Caring for an individual requires a relationship and empathy. By expanding collaborative romance with patients, I can provide prompt and concentrated interventions which can limit condition.
Action Plan
My aim is to be proactive in the foreseeable future by promptly checking. I aim to develop the skill of emotional resilience to have the ability to deliver and acquire any treatment.
Conclusion
Like many others on the group, I thought that students have there been through choice, they wished to learn. Because of this I expected the group to be mature and behaved. Because of my insufficient experience in good care and the work title of learner nurse, I recognized that most classes would run in a lecture format. This was probably a very naive move ahead my part, however following my first two periods, I realised that if I was to be a successful university student nurse, I had fashioned to modify my procedure. I had a need to focus more after my participation and participation, getting the group involved in sessions would assist in improving my learning process.
However as I develop my medical skills and also my capability to reflect, I've begun to understand that the procedure of representation is more complex than Gibbs (1988) suggests. Whilst Gibbs shows key regions of the process, I feel that representation is not as cyclical as this model indicates. As my reflective skills develop, I am finding myself jumping some phases of the routine, revisiting others and occasionally digressing in several directions.
I believe that this represents my views of reflection as I've a start point (the experience) and an end point (the final results/actions), but by domain flipping get there is down to my trail of thought. Whilst at this stage of my development I would not type myself as a 'successful, ' I believe I am attempting to develop the abilities required to achieve success.
