Strategies TO BOOST Parental Involvement Education Essay

Introduction

Parental engagement in students' education has become a greater challenge in recent years and has posed a difficulty for educators in Jamaica. Parents have rivalling priorities which in many cases reduce the variety and quality of the time available for their engagement with children's education. Now more than ever, mothers constitute a sizable part of the workforce which does not enable quality time to be spent with children. Many children are moving into low-income single girl headed homeowners without the essential essentials such as proper food, clothing and shelter. In spite of the Ministry of Education implementations of parenting workshops and workshops to help parents with the work of parenting, not much has change. This newspaper seeks to discuss and find ways of improve parental participation.

In articles shared in the Daily Gleaner dated May 26, 2008, Sylvester Anderson the leader of the National Parents Teacher's Connection of Jamaica pressured that there is a great need for better parental involvement in student's educational development. He explained that things had been improving but, there was still a long way going as attendance at PTA meetings was quite low with attendance rate of about 20 to 30 %, which is inadequate for a collaboration. Furthermore, most parents show up for the first meeting of the institution year, but the rate dwindled to a severe low for the rest of the institution term, while others do not even bother to go to the classes or collect their children's academics report. Subsequently, parents are reminded that their job does not end with just sending their children to institution, but they need to be involved in every section of the child's development. However, as children's first educator, parents have the responsibility to ensure that they participate in their children's university life in order for children to attain corresponding to Vygotsky, their area of proximal development (cited in Berk, 2006, p. 260).

In Jamaica, especially in the inner-city community, the high fertility rate caused by teenage pregnancies has shown a marked difference between adolescent parenting versus adult parenting, as teenaged parents lack the resources and maturity to care for their children sufficiently. However the situation of poor parental participation isn't just seen in adolescent parents but adult parents too. This is in many cases manifested in the interest shown in the actions at school. Many parents have lost interest or have little or no time to be engaged in university activities which includes damaged their children's performance. Some however, are illiterate, lack training or skill and also have not completed supplementary education hence their inability to secure jobs to care for their children or assist them in their college activities. Despite being unemployed, some parents still do not go to meetings unless refreshment is provided or they can gain tangible rewards. This demonstrates parents places very little value on their children's educational experience. Furthermore, some moms are oftentimes occupied caring for younger children which led to their absence from all activities that occurs at their children's college.

In many of the homes fathers are absent leaving the responsibility of parenting on the mothers. Some get excited about gangs and show little inclination to take part in university activities although they are unemployed. Many parents do not appear to get their children's education as main concern but instead will be more considering partying, fun and fashion than in the training with their children. This is evident in the small quantity of children registered at delivery or fully immunize in spite of the service for the latter being free (extracted from the school admission record for 2008-2011). Because of this, these children are in a threat of not developing to their fullest potential. For example, there are some children who is capable of doing well academically but display disruptive behaviours, while there are certainly others who are socially experienced but are academically challenged.

He further stated that the first strategy to solve this problem is education, so that parents can be introspective about their behaviour and reform achieved. Parents on the other palm have many problems that have prevented them from being involved in school. A number of the obstacles to parental participation are; parents being too occupied, frustrated, too exhausted, having other siblings to look after, economically deprived, disinterested or too burdened by their own problems.

Parents also dread being engaged, not fully understanding what they can do and exactly how valuable their contribution is with their children's academic achievement. Eldridge (2001) confirms this in a statement by parents that they assume that "their assistance isn't needed by the colleges or educator" (p. 66). Some professors do not help the problem either as they think parents have nothing at all to contribute. Becher (1984) opines that teachers fear that parents will need over their teaching responsibilities and become too critical of these. Furthermore, some instructors are also uncomfortable discussing issues before parents as they don't trust them. In order to alleviate parents fear, instructors must create a host where parents are perceived as associates in the educational process rather than as adversaries.

Epstein (1995) opines that solo parents have been identified as another hurdle to parental involvement. This is because of this of one parents being poorer, less educated, and youthful than is the truth of two parents in two-parent homes. Despite their status parents play an important role in the life of these children even if they are sole, uneducated or economically deprived.

Not surprisingly Pena (2000) advises that teachers do not give up as it is the challenging parents who most need the teacher's attention and resources. Therefore, with an improved knowledge of a family's situation, professors are more likely to become more supportive of the parents and less inclined to be judgmental of these.

According to Epstein (1995) children whose parents are involved in their education will be more determined to learn. Stimulated students tend to be involved in category, more worried about homework and more successful academically. In addition, children's success in university will be reliant on the level of participation of parents along the way. Classes need to keep parents involved so they will better understand the value of these role in the educational process. In addition, the school can start community conferences to help young families understand schools and to help classes understand families, instruct parents about child development and what things to expect from children at different age ranges, instruct parents behavior changes strategies so they can discipline their children without make, help parents to develop ways they can energize their children's intellectual and mental expansion, while parents are waiting around to accumulate their children show videos about how exactly children learn and exactly how to utilize children with special needs, help parents instruct their children by making certain parents understand principles being shown, offer parents opportunities to familiarize themselves with classroom materials and discuss grade-level curriculum.
