Bildungsroman, in essence is a coming-of-age report which must encompass either emotional or moral expansion. Sammy, in "A&P", encounters both when he chooses to give up his job. The decision he made is suppose to be logical, heroic and righteous in his sense but he comes back into simple fact when the three girls had not acknowledged his "heroism", instead it is reduced to "empty heroism". This choice doesn't have the effect he wishes; instead, he learned that choices based on impulse are not the best way to solve personal issues. He also experiences the epiphany of "how hard the entire world was going to be to him hereafter. " The abrupt realization and the lessons that he learns, form a growing up process as they are essentially an impact and catalyst to both his moral and subconscious growth.
The immaturities of Sammy are carefully highlighted throughout the start of the story. At the start of the story, Sammy represents a person that he's participating to as "one of these cash-registers-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge on her behalf cheekbone". (Updike, 1961) This dehumanizing and phoning of names shows the immaturity of Sammy. This immaturity is further reinforced when Sammy scrutinizes the three girls walking in to the store clad only in their swimwear with much sexual zest. He places his attention on their "seams on the bra" (Updike, 1961), "primma donna lower limbs" (Updike, 1961), bra straps and that "these were off her shoulder blades looped loose surrounding the cool tops of her biceps and triceps" (Updike, 1961) and that the "clean bare aircraft of the very best of her chest down from the shoulder bones" (Updike, 1961) was "more than very" (Updike, 1961) His explanation of these shows the sexual tension the particular one will expect an adolescent to possess thus reinforces his immaturity at the start of the story.
The move or the procedure of growing up can be seen through his battles and his unhappiness towards modern culture and the role he previously to squeeze in. Sammy is actually disgruntled with just how he live his life now, or in future. Finally, the affirmation of his moral and psychological growth is seen in the last part of the report. Sammy quits his job as he finally came up through all his challenges and unhappiness to make a stand, to find his devote world. His action of quitting sometimes appears by many concerning impress the girls and to turn into a 'hero'. However, on another level, it could be viewed as him making a life changing decision, conquering all societal norms and defying the requests of his superior, his parents whom he's much reliant on and lastly, the contemporary society. This decision places about much realization as he said "It's true, I don't. Nonetheless it seems to me that once start a gesture it's fatal never to go through with it. " (Updike, 1961), another epiphany, sadly is his realization of just "how hard the world would be to him hereafter. The significance of "Queenie" is not only to bring out his immaturity and erotic tension that he has, she will be a mark of the upper class where he'll want to be. Sammy wants to be among family members where in fact the "dad and the other men were standing up around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the ladies were in sandals picking right up herring treats on toothpicks off a large glass plate and they were all keeping drinks the colour of drinking water with olives and sprigs of mint in them" (Updike, 1961) so that he realizes that Queenie belongs to his desired qualifications, Sammy stated that "she remembers her place, a location that the masses that works the A & P must look pretty crummy" (Updike, 1961) when she actually is being lectured by Lengel. Using allegory, the clients or locals are termed as "sheep". Taking reference to an earlier offer, Sammy talked about that "I gamble you could tripped dynamite in the A&P and the folks would by and large keep getting and checking out oatmeal off their lists. . . " (Updike, 1961) Significantly, "the sheep moving their carts down the aisle --the young girls are walking against the usual traffic" (Updike, 1961) Sheep conforms, it is this conformity that Sammy tries to resist and once again aiding my earlier arguments, he wants to be in the group of girls and "walk against it" This breakaway from societal norms is seen as growth as Sammy became conscious of his place and can take his stand.
Gray and colorless society versus the vibrant girls
The world as portrayed through Sammy is one of gray and colorless, evident from his vibrant description, "holding a little gray jar in her hands" (Updike, 1961), "Stokesie with his usual luck draws an old part in baggy grey shorts" (Updike, 1961)and "Lengel sighs and commences to look very patient and old and gray", this grayness and dullness compared to the "bright green", chubby-berry encounters" and "dirty-pink" (Updike, 1961)of the three women is a another juxtaposition of the old population and the up and coming society, moreover, having my point that "A&P" can be seen as a coming-of-age story, is the disagreement of Sammy that because the town is full of sheep and gray heroes, the "colorful" females have to be disapproved and ridiculed by Lengel, once again, representing the expert of culture norms. Thus, Sammy once more rejects moral conformity and requires his stand, and stand up for the girls. This rejection and realization of his put in place society is showing of "A&P" being a Bildungsroman.
Conclusion
In summary, "A&P" is a bildungsroman of several levels, morally and psychologically in the case of Sammy and not forgetting the momentarily elevation of communal status as well as the growing up of a generation not attempting to conform to more mature values and traditions
