The Empowering Disabled People Community Work Essay

'To what degree are disabled people empowered to determine their own needs and choose their own support services? Firstly this assignment looks at defining disability and the advantages of empowerment within the disabled community. It'll consider the situation as it is currently and where in fact the future is situated for disabled parents.

There are extensive ways to define disability but the United Nations classification of disability seems to be a more generalised definition

Since the 1940s there have been dramatic political and policy inventions focused on the disabled people, these can be seen to rise from the creation of the British welfare state. The transfer from institutionalising and managing people who have disabilities, to empowering those who you live with disabilities, was more recognizable in the later area of the twentieth century with the formation of the Centre for Separate Living (CIL) in the 1980s. This was an organisation run and manipulated by disabled people; it centered on encouraging disabled people in taking greater control of their lives and in choosing the services that they used (Glasby, & Littlechild, 2009, p. 12). The CIL progressed into the newer Country wide Centre for Indie Living (NCIL). Andy done his college and wished to go after his desire of working with autos. Andy found a course at a School in Cumbria where he resided, predicated on his love of automobiles. Andy efficiently completed his course and today has a part-time job working voluntarily at Halfords and a paid part-time job as a job coordinator for People First Cumbria" (cited by SCIE, 2011, [Online]).

This story from Andy shows that even though unbiased living is positive thing it can leave something user exposed to misuse and exploitation, but is this not similar for just about any able person since there is always a risk of men and women being taken advantage of by others. The level of empowering disabled people seems to be putting disabled adults on par to able parents as it pertains to choice allowing life experience and taking chances. Andy's comments from his experience were interesting he said "if he previously been completely protected from risk, he would never have learned all about trust and gained the assurance to deal with people trying to take advantage. 'People learn by causing mistakes. I needed to make mistakes too therefore i could learn" (cited by SCIE, 2011, [Online]). This declaration shows how a positive risk can have benefits in expanding life skills necessary for indie living and also illustrates what lengths empowering personal choice has come, which predicated on framework is carried out within support plans as allowed risk.

Andy's story demonstrates support plans have to be created with service user type, but this also outlines the risk of misuse and exploitation.
