The Greek Culture And Oedipus The King

I have chosen to talk about the Greek culture because I think that our present culture has many similarities to the Greek's culture. Our culture today is in fact surprisingly similar to that of the Greeks. Some of these similarities are education, authorities, and religion.

One similarity that we have to the Greek's culture is the Greek's devotion to intellectual integrity and their development of a system of institutions. The Greeks comprehended how important it is to have a good education. I agree with them because I believe it is vital to get at least a higher school education and I also think it is important to truly have a college or university education. I think that with knowledge comes electricity and having knowledge can lead to good things. Today, most people essentially think like the Greeks have about intellectual integrity and a development of a system of classes. We still see the value of a good education today. Having a college degree in the current society retains more job opportunities than someone who just has a high school education. One of the main goals of education in Greece was to get ready a kid for adult activities as a citizen which is something that our society still will today. Parents prepare their kids for adulthood.

Another similarity that we have set alongside the Greek culture will there be use of your democracy system. The Greeks were actually those that created the first democracy. This is of democracy is the rule of the people. They comprehended how important it is to include the individuals in the decisions that are created for a culture.

When authority numbers make decisions over a society minus the people of that society's applying for grants those decisions, I'm sure that people have a tendency to get pretty annoyed. The United States still uses a democracy system of federal government today because, like the Greeks, we observe how important it is perfect for the visitors to have some source as well. The Greeks also experienced a liberal view toward education that was generally in charge of the downfall of Classical Greek civilization. There are lots of individuals who still have a liberal viewpoint today. We have republicans as well but we still have those liberals. Not merely was their democracy important, however the role that the folks of their society played were very important as well. In Greek culture, the woman's job was to run the house and keep children. In lots of families today, it's important the woman continues at home and manages the house. Of course, it is still very important for women to bear children also. The men put in significant amounts of time abroad and when they weren't involved with politics, they put in time in the fields with their crops. We still see this today. A whole lot of men spend some time abroad because of their job. A whole lot of folks still farm for a living today and the ones people, during the summer, spend a lot of time abroad caring for their vegetation.

The previous similarity between your Greek culture and our present world that I will discuss is religious beliefs. The Greeks were deeply religious individuals who usually worshiped many gods. Not only did the Greeks write stories about gods and goddesses, they also created a lot of art work such as paintings and sculptures that portrayed Greek gods or goddesses. Most people today are still very religious. Nearly every faith of today requires the worship of the god.

The only religion that I can think of this doesn't worship a god is Atheism and I think that they don't have confidence in gods. I mean, the majority of us religious people still go to cathedral, browse the bible, and pray to be able to worship our god.

Although the Greeks were very spiritual and thought it was very important to worship their gods, they also experienced an anthropocentric way of thinking. The definition of anthropocentric is basically that man is the guts of everything which is most important. In other words, the Greeks presumed that they were the main and maybe even more important than their gods. Regrettably, I assume that some or possibly a lot of people still think like this today. I think you may still find those individuals that feel that God is very important but when it comes down to it, they think deep down that they could actually be more important and they are actually the center of everything. I am not anthropocentric at all. I assume that God is most significant and that he's the center of everything.

Now I am going to discuss the Greek work of books Oedipus the Ruler. In this account, Oedipus is the ruler of Thebes. Thebes is actually a dying city and Oedipus is deeply concerned of why Thebes is dying. Oedipus is somebody who is desperately seeking the truth of things so he goes to a blind man known as Tiresias and he tells Oedipus about all of these prophecies regarding Oedipus himself. Oedipus does not consider what Tiresias tells him but Oedipus realizes throughout the storyplot that Tiresias prophecies are in fact true. The primary discord in Oedipus the King is between opinion and certainty. The belief is the fact intellect makes humanity get better at of its fate versus the truth of humanity being helpless against some cruel fate. This kind of goes back compared to that anthropocentric thought process.

For a person to think that he or she can control his / her own fate because of his / her intelligence feels like and anthropocentric way of thinking to me. I believe whatever God has organized is what is going to happen no matter how smart someone is. On site 617, lines 216-219, the chorus of the play says:

" O golden princess of god, send rescue radiant as the kindness in your eyes! Drive him back! - the fever, the god of fatality that raging god of warfare. "

The chorus is praying that the girl of god send recovery and drive back the god of loss of life from the location of Thebes. This goes back to the Greek's being very religious people and worshiping gods. All throughout Oedipus the King, the characters talk about some sort of god very often. Today, spiritual people still pray to their god for help which is the proceedings in these lines from Oedipus the King. I can relate with this because if I know a person who is badly in need of help, I pray for him or her in hopes that he / she will acquire help which is exactly what the chorus of the story was doing in these lines of the play.

The Greek culture got many similarities to your present contemporary society today. Some of these similarities are education, government, and religion. The play of Oedipus the Ruler shows characteristics of the Greek culture throughout the play. The Greeks made very important trends and some of them are very obvious the present population of today.
