"The Lottery" and "AN EXCELLENT Man Is Hard to Find" Analysis

Fiction/Short Account Essay

In both of the brief testimonies, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "AN EXCELLENT Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, both writers use characterization, figure names, and symbolism to portray their people' ideals and beliefs and their strengths and weaknesses in an identical yet different subject. The heroes' labels and icons in each history support the theme of each story that these were created in.

"AN EXCELLENT Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor appeared to use the newer for enough time the book was written and basic explanation of evil-good people who face the wrath of an disturbed man for no reason. The storyplot was far more complex than just its explanation of wicked, and was interesting in lots of ways, but not so much interesting in its depiction of the bad personality. Overall, I'd say the tale reinforced traditional thoughts about what a disturbed persona was, the Misfit, a person who was a criminal and who wiped out those who crossed him with little to no reason. The Misfit can be seen as more evil if one looks at the storyline more literally also to a deeper point, understanding the grandmother as his real biological mom. However, this might mostly serve to support the nature of the disturbed characters that already is available. Someone who would kill his own mother for any reason would likely fit into anyone's classical classification of disturbed. The main disturbed characters in this brief story are: The Grandmother and the Misfit. The Grandmother is the manipulator in the story, she doesn't want to go to Florida because she's acquired family members to see in Tennessee and seizing at every chance to improve Bailey's mind. (O'Connor 567). To gets her way, she wanting to scare her boy with reports of an unlawful on the loose and guilt trip him about taking his children there. That is said by the grandmother: "Just you read it. I wouldn't take my children in virtually any path with a criminal like this aloose in it. I couldn't response to my conscience if I do. " (O'Connor 567). With all the Misfit, he was the mystical criminal who acquired run into the family and wiped out them all as he assumed that these were in his way of escaping. His instant of zenith was him declaring: "I found out the offense don't matter. You can do a very important factor or you can certainly do another, kill a man or have a car tire off his car, because ultimately you're going to ignore what it was you done and you need to be punished for it (O'Connor 578). " The icons in the story will be the Misfit's car, the dark forest, and the cloudless, sunless sky; each of these foreshadowed the occasions of death were to come.

I didn't see "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson as portraying a disturbed figure, but more as disturbing ways in their modern culture. While there were sinful deeds being done, it would be practically impossible to pin them on any modern individuals in the storyplot, and for that reason is slightly different from the other account that we have read and discussed. However, the evil is provided as taking the lives of innocents, a theme wherever evil is presented. The primary people in this storyline are: Tessie Hutchinson, Old Man Warner, Mr. Summers, Costs Hutchinson, and Mr. Harry Graves. Tessie was the unlucky one of the pulling and was stoned to loss of life, she is a kind of hypocrite in the storyline. That she is excited to take part in the lottery, but things when her family name is named, it is currently unfair. As shouted by Tessie to her husband: Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers. "You didn't give him time enough to adopt any paper he desired. I saw you. It wasn't good!" (Jackson 6) Mr. Warner was the oldest, and declare that this prevents the barbaric condition from time for the town. Mr. Graves supports the lottery, as well as Mr. Summers assisting in the ritual. The icons in this tale are: The lottery as the main importance of your day as it is intended to be as a real human sacrifice to the higher beings, the black box as to symbolize the decision as to who'll perish today, the feces could symbolize the holy trinity, and the stones in an effort to generate a public to come watching and/or take part. The Lottery experienced started in an effort to sacrifice for a good growing season, but soon became a schedule in their daily lives annually.

Both of the testimonies have similar thematic links within them to complement up with the Southern Gothic genera, as thought as disturbed people doing troubling things. Jackson and O'Connor use central personas to show how men have the power to misrepresent truth into something individuals accept into everyday activities as a tradition in "The Lottery" said in the story

"they half listened to the guidelines, " (Jackson 4) and in "AN EXCELLENT Man Is Difficult to find" the type, Misfit, will not keep in mind why he was locked up, but wiped out the family to "save" them from sinning again to keep up his head straight. Both tales were surprising in their class of troubling and callousness, and I agree with both author's representation of the type of troubling and the way people respond to it.

In both of the brief experiences, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, both writers use characterization, persona brands, and symbolism to portray their people' worth and values and their advantages and weaknesses in an identical yet different subject. In this way they show that years aside from one another, the Southern Gothic genera will remain the same. For the similarities between all the personas in both brief stories, they'll remain the same and have fatal endings. In "AN EXCELLENT Man Is Difficult to find" it is a more traditional evil symbolized throughout, while in "The Lottery" it symbolize an evil and disturbed modern culture they reside in.
