The reading which I have read is entitled "The Self applied" by George Herbert Mead. I am going to first summarize the reading, and then illustrate how Mead's article helps me to understand the type and creation of the self. Next, I will illustrate how my self-identity ranges corresponding to my characteristics.
Mead first identified the dissimilarities between self applied and your body. The self is something which has a development and occurs along the way of social experience and activity; while the person is inborn. We are able to lose areas of the body without serious damage of the home. For example, impaired people may lose their sensory organs or limbs, nevertheless they can still maintain an entire self. The personal can be both a topic and an object; which is bounded by things and functions. The object of self differs from other items that it is related to the mindful experience. Mead talked about that: "to be object to oneself, one must maintain a reflexive sense". You will discover activities that the do it yourself does not enter into a person; the example found in the reading is whenever a person is jogging from something, he has no consciousness of self applied. In situations when people are having an interview, they sometimes miss out considerations, or hand out wrong information; Mead considered these situations as folks are not themselves. Furthermore, social experience determines the amount of self is given out in the communication.
Mead said it is normal to possess multiple personalities. When we run into with different people, we have different selves to meet various social reactions. The unity and framework of the entire self reflects the complete social structure; and the elementary selves echo various aspects of the social structure.
According to Mead, there are two levels for the full development of do it yourself. The first level is the organization of viewpoints of others towards the person. The second stage is the organization of viewpoints of the cultural group which a person belongs to.
Self-consciousness requires an 'purpose, non-affective frame of mind' towards itself. It is possible to gain self-consciousness as when an individual views himself from the standpoint from the others. When we speak to others, we have been continually following up our own words and handling what we are going to say by observing the others' reactions. Person thinks before function, we think what others are planning of us. A person sometimes separates his genuine thoughts from what he speaks.
Mead outlined three kinds of activities, dialect, play and the overall game, which are crucial to the formation of self. Mead described language as the 'significant symbols' that you reaches know the viewpoints of the others towards him. Children take different functions in a play, and imaginary companions permit them to gain experience. Through the procedure of role-playing, children demand responses from the others, and this helps them to generate self-consciousness. In the game, individual must know the assignments and attitudes of all others who are involved in the game, as well as the guidelines of the game. The "generalized other" refers to the attitudes and objectives of the society. Self-consciousness is achieved when a person might view himself from the standpoint of the generalized other.
Mead concluded by saying that each people is different from the others, but there's a common structure in which a self is shaped. To get ourselves, we must be users of the city that have common attitudes. Own self and the self of others are related. Finally, the structure of self reflects the general habit structure of the interpersonal group.
Mead's article helps me to understand the nature and formation of personal by clearly list out the characteristics of do it yourself and then providing information on how self is produced. I have known that the self has an objective area which is developed through communal experiences. Mead's article makes me think about my daily activities and interactions with the others, indeed each folks have multiple selves when facing different people. Some interesting samples including the self applied does not enter into a person and the person is not himself makes me understand the type of self in different situations that is related to self-consciousness. I arrived to realize that the forming of self is an on-going process in life and there are ways to attain a full self applied. I formerly thought that words contributes the most in creation of self applied, but Mead brought new ideas that game titles and play are also adding. Lastly, Mead's article allows me to associate myself to the broader sense like the cultural categories and the society. Actually each folks constitutes the society, and what we do displays the problem in the culture.
My self-identity ranges matching to my characteristics, and I have multiple identities. My gender individuality is a womanly woman; my age group identification is 18 yrs. old and I am now a teenager. I consider myself as a member of the middle class predicated on my living environment and my household income. Regarding my education identity, I am now a school student studying Friendly Sciences their studies at the University or college of Hong Kong. Moreover, I am a Chinese language since I am given birth to in Hong Kong. My self-identity changes because I have different roles in various levels of life. While using example of my education individuality, I began my education since kindergarten, accompanied by primary and extra education, and I am learning in the college or university at the moment. This corresponds to Mead that my self-identity has a development and arises along the way of social experience and activity.
Mead brought up that attitudes and actions of selves reflect the general style of the interpersonal group. Among the personal good examples is that when I got in secondary institution, I appreciated that professors always remind us to act ourselves after dismissal. It is because while we could wearing our even, we represent the institution, and our every function and just how we talk impacts how the general public think of your school. If I behave indecently, people will have a bad impression overall school. Among the illustrations in the world level is the fact a few of the Legislative Council associates do radical serves such as hurling bananas and yelling their slogans during the conferences, which their functions destroyed the order. Their behaviors are reflecting the style and way used to express ideas by their politics party. Political radicals like Wong Yuk-man and Leung Kwok-hung represent People Power and the League of Community Democrats respectively, and their actions reflect the general behavior pattern of their social groupings. Our self and personality develop from our affiliations and our action represents the complete group.
In conclusion, I have known the characteristics and creation of self from Mead, and I have deeper understanding towards the partnership between individual and the contemporary society. By focusing on how people think and interact, it is simpler for all of us to talk and gain acceptance in the world. By knowing our very own identities and our roles, we can match our tasks and turn our population into a better place.
