What Motivates You to be a Nurse? A Personal Reflection

Keywords: desire for medical, nursing motivation essay, nurse career reflection

Just last year I started on my trip to learning to be a nurse. I wish to be a nurse because Personally i think enjoy it was one of the very most rewarding careers an individual can hold. There are many different areas of nursing that I can choose to go after. My goal after graduating with a BS in nursing from School is to apply for per year and then try to sign up for a nurse anesthetist program. There are various definitions of just what a nurse is really. Some pass a formal classification of the practice but others believe that it is a lot more personable then that. My health instructor for the term will be, Personally i think like we work well collectively and he can certainly help me accomplish a few of my heath goals which i created after concluding my self evaluation. Like a nurse one will need high-level wellness to allow them to perform well at the job. Stress is a key factor that should be controlled. Nurses are put under a significant amount of stress and being able to control that stress is key in a nurse's career.

A Look at the Nursing Profession

Ever since I used to be very little my mom has been taking care of me. As a nurse she acquired so much passion for taking treatment of people. I really do not think my mom ever turned down a person who was looking for her services. I still remember to this day, family members from both sides of the family dialling my mommy when they sensed ill or got some type of injury. She enjoyed helping people and people liked being helped by her. Personally i think like a person is born with the characteristics of becoming a great nurse. It really is that are looking to help a person which is why is someone a great nurse. I want to be considered a nurse because like my mother I love to help people and just be around people generally. I really do not think anything is more satisfying then helping someone in crisis. Most people become so appreciative of your services because as a nurse you truly are putting someone else before yourself and that person you are assisting becomes so appreciative of you for doing that. However sometimes patients that you'll have will not be as appreciative of your services as others and then as a nurse one must reflect on how even though they could not have loved you now, sooner later they'll realize what you as a nurse has done for them. That's the reason I choose nursing as a career I want to pursue.

I desire to be a RN (RN) rather than other healthcare profession because I feel like as an RN there are just so many options for you skill. An RN can choose to utilize the elderly or children or people in critical condition. The options are endless and I also like the overall responsibilities that all nurses have in comparison to other health care workers. I am choosing to get a Bachelors of Technology Degree (BS) because I really need to turn into a nurse anesthetist but first I need to obtain a BS and then practice for yearly in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before I can get back to institution. By obtaining my BS I can then be better ready for after i take my National Council Licensure Evaluation (NCLEX) test to become a licensed nurse. Without my BS I would not be able to prosper on the test.

There are many different regions of nursing which is what makes nursing such a unique field because there are so many different paths one can pursue. People think nursing is just a simple profession but it surely is not. After deciding I needed to be always a nurse I made a decision to look into different fields I possibly could to be a part of. I narrowed it right down to two different areas of nursing. The first area I needed to focus on was becoming a critical care and attention nurse. AS I was in high school I shadowed a nurse and one day she got me to the Intensive Good care Unit floor. I must say i liked all the and intensity that the machine had to offer. The second area of nursing I got thinking about focusing on was anesthesiology which is the field that I have made my final decision to specialize in. In senior high school I did so a project on learning to be a nurse anesthetist and I was very thinking about it. I learned about all the jobs responsibilities which it entailed combined with the many other aspects of the profession. I even possessed the privilege of shadowing a nurse anesthetist where I learned first hands what the job had to offer.

As a nurse anesthetist I feel that some of my strengths are the want to help people. Naturally as a nurse you will need to want to help people improve their health. You need to put yourself second when helping these folks and get the patient through probably some of the most difficult times in their lives. I also think as a nurse you need to be outgoing and friendly and I feel I have both of these qualities. I want to be around people and Personally i think like I can really comfort people when it's most needed. Finally Personally i think my final power is the fact that I've some basic knowledge of what the job requires from my shadowing hours and tasks that I've completed. Personally i think that you of my biggest liabilities is really getting accepted into an anesthetist program when i pass my nursing exam. The anesthetists programs are extremely competitive and you must have excellent levels and recommendations to be accepted in to the program.

A nurse is a lot more than simply a person whose job is to take care of the sick. A nurse is a sort person, a person who puts the patients needs first and gives healthcare in a specialist and kind way. A nurse has many responsibilities. Obviously the renowned one is just the general care for their patients. I feel like nurses now are moving out from the doctor's darkness. Nurses are much more respected these days and are actually making a name for themselves as a whole rather than as a team with doctors and other healthcare workers. They receive a lot more respect and duties nowadays than they have several years ago. As a registered nurse you supply your patients with the treatment of their problem as well as educating them how to boost their health situations. A registered nurse also participates in evaluating the patients care and attention and designs the patients discharge plans. A registered nurse has many obligations which can include understanding the patients situation, administering the individual a helpful medication, and assessing how the medication that is to be given to the patient will affect them and also predict the outcome after care is directed at them. These days nurses are also included and in charge of operating complex and new lease of life keeping equipment.

A nurse needs certain skills that are used daily in their vocation. A good example of this is communication skills. For a nurse to be successful they have to have excellent communication skills that include speaking and being attentive. Nurses have to be in a position to follow directions and talk effectively with patients and their families to help them understand the treatment being given. Another characteristic a nurse needs to have is good focus on detail. An excellent nurse pays great attention to detail when supplying treatment as well as interpreting expected goals and results for the patient. Problem solving skills also you need to a nurse's experience because they need to think quickly using situations and solve problems before or after they arise. One last trait a nurse will need is usually to be caring and empathetic to patients as the nurse evaluates and conducts an idea of action to solve their health issues (AllNurses. com).

To be genuine before deciding to become a nurse and also research the occupation I thought of nurses almost as "cleaning" health care workers who took care of all the doctors' grubby work. It had been not until in senior high school when I actually do research on this issue and figured out they have so many more obligations then just clearing up after patients. Also in senior high school I had fashioned the privilege of shadowing my mother who actually was and still is a working nurse at a local walk-in treatment center. WHILE I shadowed my mom taking care of individuals and getting together with people it really put the profession in full perspective for me personally. I could see firsthand just what a nurse was responsible for. Even though my mommy was getting a bad day she needed to respond professional and become if nothing was incorrect because jobs interacting with the public like nursing you need to act professional always.

As a nursing major I feel like I have to possess some features that will further me in this program and in my destined profession. I chose medical because Personally i think like I am a difficult staff member and I get jobs done when they receive to me. I also consider myself a "people person. " I love being around people in every situations and love aiding people. I am also an agreeable person which can be an important aspect of being a nurse.

I took a self assessment (see Appendix A) to identify areas of my health I have to improve. For the word my health trainer is Colin Hoey. I select Colin because we have been friends since this past year and Personally i think like we've many of the same interests whether it's in institution or athletics. We likewise have a few of the same what to work on so I thought it was a good idea that we made a decision to be each other's health mentors. After filling in the self analysis I found a couple of things I can work on for the word. My first goal is to wear a seat belt always in an automobile. Last November my pal was actually wiped out in a dui car accident because she had not been putting on her seatbelt. Both the driver and the passenger who were wearing their seatbelts were fine and unharmed, however my friend was not using hers and when the collision happened my friend hit her head contrary to the windows which eventually was the reason why she died. THEREFORE I feel like putting on my chair belt more is unquestionably something I'd like and need to work on. My second goal is to wear sunscreen with an increased SPF then 15 when outdoors on a sunshiney day. Living in the "Ocean Talk about" of Rhode Island I am constantly at the beach and in the sun and almost all of the time I really do not even trouble putting any SPF because usually my pores and skin does not burn. I must say i should start placing SPF on though because I know what can happen if you don't. If I continue steadily to not put any SPF on I am going to get lines and wrinkles and sun locations and my skin will become poor as I age as well as being at a higher risk of getting skin cancer. My last goal for the word is to get more sleep. Being at college or university I am always busy with the load of work that is given to me, however I must say i do need to get started on getting more sleep so I can perform better in the class and learn better as well. I need to begin planning out my schedule better therefore i can do all my work and still get a good nights sleep.

After arranging these goals for myself weeks ago I've now made some progress in accomplishing them. My first goal was to always wear my seatbelt whenever i was in a car. I completed that goal by simply making gaining my seatbelt a habit that I held repeating everytime I got into an automobile. My second goal was to wear sunscreen with a higher SPF than 15. I possibly could not accomplish this goal since it's the winter and the sun is not strong enough to cause any harm, however I did so research on the consequences the sun is wearing your skin and learned new facts that I will keep in head this summer to make certain I apply sunscreen with an increased SPF than 15. My last goal was to get more sleep. Within the last couple of weeks I have learned that getting enough sleep is vital to performing well in school. I make sure I specify a certain time that I am during intercourse by to make certain i am getting enough time of sleep and today I have a recognized a extreme change in my work behavior.

In nursing you are responsible for much. In this article "The Impact of Stress Management on Nurse Productivity and Retention" it explains what sort of nurse is "working tightly with dangerous diseases and knowing that an unintentional needle stay or body liquid splash can simply result in illness or even loss of life. " (Milliken & Clements & Tillman, 2007, 203) So stress is obviously heading to come in a natural way when being truly a nurse. The article also talks about how precisely there is a major lack of nurses on the globe so some nurses are asked to work two times shifts or even to look after more patients since there is a lack of nurses in health care facilities. Because nurses have so many responsibilities, it really can have a toll on the nurse's health insurance and many nurses have become influenced by this amount of extra stress because of all the responsibilities that get excited about the job. Facilities are actually taking extra precaution when working with the strain involved with nursing. Certain small breaks have been directed at nurses merely to stretch and relax before returning to work and it seems like it is making a radical difference in the nurse's performance.

I personally am a nerve-racking person. I love things to have finished and when they are not done or something moves incorrect I stress out. I have been working on this however because I've figured out that sometimes things fail and there is little or nothing you can do about any of it. When things go wrong I have found that I need to learn how to fix them quickly alternatively than stress over the situation gone wrong and simply quit. In this article "The Impact of Stress Management on Nurse Output and Retention" it talks about how as a nurse you need to be prepared for everything and that is where the stress will come in. the most important lessons a nurse could learn is to relax because when someone is pressured they don't act how they often would and if a nurse is at a certain situation where its life threatening they have to learn how to control their stress levels and find out the situation accessible as calmly and proficiently as possible. Despite the fact that I am not that comfortable with change I've found that change is inescapable and change must take place so we as nurses will keep progressing inside our practice. Without change nurses wouldn't normally learn how to properly care for their patients and their methods of healthcare would become out-of-date.

Nursing is a active career. As a nurse you are constantly moving around and under a significant amount of pressure, so it is hard to say that while nurses are looking after others they also need to look after themselves and make sure they have got a good amount of health and fitness in their lives so they can perform when they are under high degrees of stress (Milliken & Clements & Tillman, 2007). There are many different areas of wellbeing that nurses should acknowledge in order to achieve high health and fitness in their lives. The first is nutrition. As a nurse you should cut down foods containing fatiguing materials from your diet and boost the amount of foods which contain sustaining ingredients. Sugars are a great food to take in for energy throughout a nurse's day. Nurses should try to avoid drinks like coffee and tea because those beverages will cause the entire body to become too energized and then gradually begin to lose excessive levels of energy. "If you eat wisely and balance the other measurements of wellness, you'll always have energy and won't need stimulants" (Clark, 2006, 2).

The next dimensions of high wellness is fitness (Clark, 2006). As the nurse you are constantly moving around, picking things up and moving heavy patients or things from different places. As a nurse you should be training and doing aerobic activity frequently. Nurses need to be in good condition because of all strenuous activities that they have to do that comes with the job. Also flexibility is a good thing to have when being a nurse so going for a yoga class is a good idea to increase one's versatility so a nurse can perform better.

The next aspect is stress management (Clark, 2006). Stress management is critical to possess when becoming a nurse because of the sometimes overwhelming responsibilities a nurse has at a healthcare facility, specifically for a nurse employed in a critical good care device. For nurses to keep their stress levels down they have got several options they can do. A good example would be creating a daily deep breathing period. Yoga can clear the mind and put your body at ease. Another technique is merely taking a couple of minutes at the job to expand and relax. Even doing that for a minimal amount of time can make a huge difference in a nurse's day. The most important thing for nurses to do to relieve stress is just to route their energy in positive ways.

The last sizing of achieving high health and fitness for a nurse is caring (Clark, 2006). Most nurses sometimes spend too much time looking after their patients that they neglect to care for themselves. Even though it could be hard for a nurse since their job fundamentally consists of caring, nurses needs to be sure there is balance in their lives with the quantity of time they look after others and then for themselves. Nurses should surround themselves with people who are living a higher wellness lifestyle since that time they may be more prone to follow their friend's life styles and achieve high wellness.

When planning my cover of arms (See Appendix B) I really had to take into account just what a nurse is within four words. My first phrase was compassionate. As the nurse you need to be compassionate towards your patients and you have to like what you do because if you are a nurse, nor like your task then you are most likely not going to have the ability to give your patients the assistance that they need. My second word is rewarding. Being a nurse is a satisfying profession because you are constantly assisting your patients improve your health again also to see that you helped someone like that on such a personal level is very satisfying. My third word is caring. I think as a nurse you need to be caring because you truly are caring for individuals all throughout your day. My final word is sensible. As being a nurse you should have many tasks. Nurses are fundamentally accountable for their patient's lives and have the life span of another person in the hands you should be a very accountable person.

Overall I feel that I have made a good choice to become nurse. I think that it will be a very rewarding career for me as I increase in the field so that as a person. Presently I am in my second yr of nursing university and I must say i have enjoyed it so far. Personally i think like at Elmira College or university I could really apply myself and become a great nurse. After writing this paper and doing numerous research on the assigned topics I've learned a lot information about the career of nursing i didn't know before. Writing this newspaper really gave me a good notion of the particular profession provides.
