  1. Who? The queen, along with her husband, Prince Philip, officially opened Kielder Water in Northumberland.
  2. Kielder Water is located in the North Tyne valley in Northumberland, a county in northern England. It’s in Pennines in the north west of the county.
  3. It is a large reservoir that can hold 44,000 million gallons of water. Kielder Water is managed by Northumbrian Water. It stores the water for several counties including some parts of Cumbria and North Yorkshire as well as the counties of county Durham and Northumberland. It is in the north west, so it receives a great deal of precipitation. Water from the reservoir is piped and then runs through rivers to the cities and areas that suffer from a lack of water. It serves the cities and towns in Tyneside, Teeside and Wearside
  4. It was constructed to alleviate the water shortages in some area of north east England. Not all areas have the same amount of rainfall.
  5. Construction work on Kielder Water began in 1975. It was first flooded in 1982. It was opened in 1982.
  • £6 million is raised from tourism, to Kielder every year.
  • Contrary to popular belief there are no abandoned buildings under the water. They were all demolished before the area was flooded.
  • The reservoir is an incredible 11 kilometres long.
  • Although the dam flooded an area of natural beauty, there are now 8 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). These sites have some unique flora and fauna the red squirrel among them. The site now has around 50% of the UK’s red squirrel population.
  • By capacity, Kleider’s lake (reservoir) is the largest man-made one in northern Europe. It has a shoreline of 27 miles.
  • It cost £167million to build.
  • In 2017 a second observatory was constructed, although the original one is still used. The sky above the area is the darkest in England.
  • In 2009 ospreys once again returned to the area.
  • The water vole, now quite rare in Britain because of the invasive American mink, has been reintroduced to the area.

Advantages of the Kielder reservoir

  • Hydroelectric power is clean and reliable and generated at the dam.
  • The UK’s north-east now has a steady supply of water.
  • Because the dam attracts tourists, new jobs have been created and people can enjoy water sports on the lake.
  • Additional revenue from tourism can benefit the area.
