Conflicts Between East And Western world In Dracula English Literature Essay

In Dracula, Bram Stokers shows the issue between East and Western. Jonathan Harker calls for quest from the West to East. He details his new and isolated emotions from the East community. It appears clear that Stoker prefers familiar Traditional western culture than the exotic and alienated Eastern. In Dracula, Western world and Eat is obviously divided; Dracula is from the Transylvania, and more try to beat Dracula are from the England, aside from Van Helsing, who symbolizes the middle part of Western and East. It is also clear that the overwhelming 'infectious' Dracula is defeated by the company from the West implies that Stoker is more toward the Western world side.

Stokers distinctively divide the Eastern and Traditional western culture. In the beginning of the chapter, Jonathan Harker says that "the impression I needed was that we were giving the Western world and going into the East. " Stokers also shows the unfamiliar and quite different culture of Eastern side compare to the Western. When Jonathan Harker is moving closer to the East, he starts off to get bizarre and fearful emotions. He starts off to see the darkness and coldness from the atmosphere as he go further to the East, "as the road was cut through the pine woods that seemed in the darkness to be concluding down us, great public of greyness produced a peculiarly unusual and solemn effect". Not just the atmosphere, Jonathan also discovered the uncomfortable and overseas attitudes of the folks. The passengers offered him a presents and Harker feels that this was "certainly an strange and diverse kind". However, when Harker points out about the feeling of the East, he doesn't illustrate it in very positive way. As he goes to East, it seems that the disposition is not simply exotic or new, but it is demonic and depressive. He represents this bad like atmosphere by adding some descriptions such as ghost like clouds, or the evil attention. Also, Stokers sets vampirism in the Eastern aspect, which it implies that he views the east in negative way. Dracula, who's a part of East, tries to dominate and kills people from the Western world. He also symbolizes violence and It shows the complete negative view of East. However, Stokers try to show the Western culture is more familiar and friendly. While Dracula works only and always move by himself, the folks from the western world always accumulate and make plan jointly. People from the west make an effort to defeat Dracula who's 'infectious' and contaminating innocent people. As a result, it shows that Stoker prefers familiar European culture alternatively than exotic Eastern culture.

Bram Stokers also demonstrates each east and west edges has different culture. While East has more mystical and naturalistic culture, West has scientific and philosophical culture. Through the chapter 1, Jonathan Harker says "it appears if you ask me that the further East you decide to go a lot more unpuctual will be the trains. What ought they to maintain China?" It compares the Eastern culture with the modernized Western culture. It also shows Bram Stoker's unfavorable view of East aspect. However, Dracula from Transylvania shows savage and brutal part of humanity that represents old-fashioned culture. On the other hand, Jonathan Harker and the users of company from the England have rational and rational way of thinking. While Dracula is powerful and vicious, people from the England are powerless and weakened. When Jonathan is in the Castle Dracula, he says "the Count up observed his victory in my own bow, and his mastery in the difficulty of my face. ". He is completely powerless in front of Dracula. It also shows that folks are weak independently. However, modernized European people realize that they can't beat him only with the physical power. They find out the logical way to beat Dracula. They discovers that the Dracula is powerless by the daylights and other holy objects such as crucifixes and Communion wafers. Finally, Dracula is wiped out by Harker and Morris. It felt that Dracula would seize the people from the west. In fact, the result is that Western culture gets control the East. By eradicating the Dracula, Stokers again shows his favoritism toward American side.

While Western world and East factors have distinctive social variations, Van Helsing, from the middle side, has both ideologies of both sides. Van Helsing is identified by Seward as "a philosopher and metaphysician, and one of the very most advanced scientists of his day". To be a philosopher and metaphysician, he has technological knowledge while he also has knowledge of superstitions. He leads the business and finds the best way to wipe out vampires. Van Helsing is the main element to resolve the conflict between your Western and East. He insists that either aspect will fail if they are biased toward one side. Van Helsing explains to John Seward, "You are a clever man, good friend John; you reason well, as well as your wit is vibrant; nevertheless, you are too prejudiced. You do not let your eyes see nor your ears notice, and that which is outside your daily life is not of bank account to you. Can you not think that there are things which you cannot understand, and yet which can be; that some people see things that others cannot? But there are things old and new which should not be contemplate by men's sight, because they know-or they think they know-some things which other man have told them. " This shows that only with one sided ideology, they can never be successful. If Van Helsing had not been area of the company, they might only think of reasonable and methodical way, so they would never been successful to eliminate Dracula.

Bram Stokers shows the Western world and East culture in totally contrary way. While he favors and leans toward more on American side, he also explains to that the both edges are needed. He shows that balance between your two cultures will bring success. As either side can't exist at exactly the same time, the simplest way is to acquire both naturalistic and philosophical ethnical views, not leaning toward one area.
