Iago is one of the very most interesting and deeply developed character types in the tragedy "Othello" by William Shakespeare. Using carefully thought-out activities and words, Iago manipulates others to do things in a way that helps him and gets him to reach his aspirations. He is the driving pressure in this play, pressing Othello and every other character to the tragic ending.
It's first apparent that Iago is merely your normal ordinary villain but he's a lot more than that. Shakespeare has decided to make Iago amoral which gives a new depth to figure and makes his actions even more villainous then they already were. Iago is a very smart character and this only supports him in his villainous ploy. Iago now starts revealing his storyline to take down Othello. Being the smart character he is, Iago takes on on Roderigo's thoughts for Desdemona and steals money from him.
"Thus should i ever make my fool my tote. For I mine own gained knowledge should profane easily would time expend with such a snipe but also for my sport and earnings. I hate the Moor, and it is thought in foreign countries that 'twixt my bedding he's done my office. I understand not if 't be true, but I, for mere suspicion for the reason that kind, will do as if for surety. He holds me well"
Iago considers it as wasted time and knowledge if he didn't play on Roderigo and get money from him or even use him against Othello. Iago simply sees Roderigo as just being desposable and easy to toy with; simply a stepping rock down his way of greed. On this estimate he also clarifies clarifies one of the major reasons why he wants the best land of Othello and how he will manipulate Othello into thinking that Cassio has already established an affair with Desdemona.
Along with being wise Iago is also an instant thinker and is able to tackle virtually any situation that you might throw at him. We first see this when Roderigo is livid once he realizes Iago's plan but Iago can make it appear a much better and quiet Roderigo down. He had taken Roderigo's anger and twisted it into a way to better along his plan. If Roderigo is blinded by anger then it will not be hard for Iago to make him imagine anything.
Iago's long term goal is to make Othello look bad and what better way to achieve that then to make him think his wife is cheating on him?
"He takes her by the hand. Ay, well done, whisper! With only a small amount an internet as this am i going to ensnare as great a fly as Cassio. Ay, smile after her, do, I'll gyve thee in thine own courtship. You say true, 'tis so, indeed. If such tips as these strip you out of your lieutenantry"
By simply twisting around normal friendly actions he can make anything seem worse and that is just what he does with Cassio and Desdemona's relationship. Cassio and Desdemona are nothing at all more then simple friends however when Iago recognizes them interacting in a little more a friendly way he believes of an idea to make Othello think that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio.
None of this would be possible if Iago didn't speak in such natural and vindictive talk. Iago discussions in a great deal of prose instead verse and that makes him just a little better to understand and get his point across. He also interacts as if he is sincerely endeavoring to help Othello however in all certainty he is only helping himself and praying that everyone else will are unsuccessful. These connections with other character types have led him to be known as "Honest Iago" even though he has already planted the seed of tragedy in Othello's mind. Iago is a professional of abusing people's trust to get more power and additional the completion of his goals, and he will this with Othello. He continues the individuals trusting him and believing that he's there for them and helping them until it all comes home on him.
Iago is able to keep Cassio's trust for as long as he needs it just by doing little favors such as this; guaranteeing time with Desdemona.
"I'll send her to you presently, and I'll devise a mean to pull the Moor taken care of, that your converse and business may be more free. "
In order to keep their trust he must keep doing things throughout the play to them but keep his concluding goal. What looks as a friendly gesture turns into a way to bring Cassio, Desdemona, and Othello down from their high graces. Iago creates the problem then transforms around and uses Cassio's visual appearance, and flirtatious manner with women to learn on what he already installed in Othello's head about Desdemona's fidelity.
In the finish of the play he completely betrays Cassio and instructs Roderigo to eliminate him. Neither of these are useful ever again to Iago so he recognizes no reason to keep them around any longer.
"I have rubbed this young quat almost to the sense, and he increases upset. Now, whether he wipe out Cassio or Cassio him, or each do destroy the other, every way makes my gain. Live Roderigo, he calling me to a restitution large of yellow metal and jewels that I bobbed from him as gift items to Desdemona. It should not be. If Cassio do continue to be he hath an everyday beauty in his life that makes me ugly"
Roderigo was nothing more a vehicle in Iago's plot and today that he is done with Roderigo you don't have to keep him around and Cassio is the likely man to eliminate him. Iago has recently made Cassio look bad in Othello's eyes and that's all he wished to do but to Iago he doesn't care whether Roderigo eliminates Cassio or Cassio kills Roderigo because either way it is good for him. In the long run than it Iago has to do it himself all while maintaining his "perfect" image.
While Iago and Bianca are supporting Cassio, Iago directs off Emilia in order to Othello however in turn Emilia shows to Othello all about how evil and vindictive Iago is. Iago kills Emilia because she actually is nothing more than a nuisance and it is the only person that can stop him from getting what he desires, but in the finish it was Iago who really ceased himself. Iago's selfishness, scheming, lying and petty revenge are what business lead to the loss of life of everything Iago once understood; even himself.
