'Life of Pi', compiled by Yann Martel, is an adventure Novel in regards to a 16 year-old youngster called Pi who, together with his family, gets shipwrecked. The theme is about struggling to survive against all odds. Only Pi plus some animals make it through. The book is split into three parts: After the author's notice, part 1 tells about Pi's young life and his love of pets or animals and religious beliefs. Part 2 is the primary area of the book which details the sinking of the ship which is carrying Pi, his family, the team plus some zoo animals. Pi's family perish and Pi is kept alone to make it through with some pets. Eventually he handles to reach land. In part 3 he tells the story of his travels but is not believed and he retells the story using humans instead of animals. The reader is kept to make his own brain up regarding which is the more credible history. In Yann Martel's Life of Pi, symbolism performs an important part.
Throughout the story, the colour orange appears often. The colour orange symbolizes success and trust. Pi himself retains hope when he is alone on his lifeboat. He wants to survive whatever happens. If the ship (Tsimtsum) sinks the Chinese language crewman help him giving Pi a lifejacket with an orange whistle; the lifeboat that was essential for his success was also orange. In a flash forward at the end of part one before the boats sinks the narrator details going to adult Pi and his family at Pi's home in Canada.
She's keeping an orange pet cat in her hands. Two front lower limbs sticking directly and deeply sunk head are that is noticeable from it above her crossed hands All of those other cat is suspending completely down to the ground. The pet seems quite tranquil about being extended on the rack this way. (web page 89)
Usha (Pi's daughter) retains an orange feline. Thus giving the audience a verification that Pi will make it through the catastrophe. The orange cat symbolizes Richard Parker the Bengal tiger, who helps Pi to make it through during his 227days at sea. The tiger, the lifeboat and the whistle (all orange) all contribute to the success of Pi and give support during mental difficult times.
Pi points out how closely religious beliefs and zoology are aligned and he uses zoos as symbolic for religion.
I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about liberty plague them both. (webpage 29)
Some people consider themselves to be 'free' from any notion or religious system, just like others misunderstand that the outrageous is not free for an pet. Zoos are often critized because they take untamed, noble animals off their natural habitat and put them into boring domesticated cages. Pi vehemently disagrees; he confirms that pets are animals of habit and will adjust to their new caged environment. In the zoo they have almost all their needs compressed into a protected climate. This is, according to Pi, heaven for animals. Just as religious beliefs offers people restrictions within which they feel secure and safe. When Pi was desperate on his lifeboat he turned to religion. He previously in truth three, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.
Pi points out: I applied religious rituals that I modified to the circumstances- solitary People without priests or consecrated Communion hosts, darshans without murtis, and pujas with turtle meat for Prasad, operates of devotion to Allah not knowing where Mecca was and getting my Arabic wrong. They helped bring me comfort. (web page 187)
When you believe in God or have faith in something you are certain of yourself. Unlike atheists who do not have confidence in anything which makes them uncertain, Pi embraces religion to get certainty The quote above bears this out.
Another mark in the book is 'Pi' which is the main persona Piscine's nickname. Pi's name is Piscine Molitor Patel. When he was still in key school kids sometimes used to
tease him by dialling him 'Pissing' rather than 'Piscine'. Pi received his name from the pool of Paris, Piscine des Tourelles and therefore children found Piscine hard to pronounce.
My name is
Piscine Molitor Patel
Known to all as
-I double underlined the first two letters of my given name-
Pi Patel
For good solution I added
(Web page 31)
When Pi started going to secondary school he chosen that to avoid people from dialling him
Pissing he made a decision to call himself Pi (see quotation). The name Pi is an extremely different name and it also
brings a great deal of symbolism with it. Pi is the Greek quantity for sixteen and Pi was sixteen when
he acquired shipwrecked. The quantity Pi is utilized to determine the circumference of any circle with the
formula:. Addititionally there is symbolism behind this because the correlation
between the linear journey to Canada and the cycles of uncertainty and beliefs are experienced by Pi. The
number Pi is a very complex number. Actually, it has so many decimal places that it's too problematic for human minds to accurately comprehend it, in the same way it says in the publication that some realities/situations are just too difficult to handle. Pi's encounters are discussed rationally by Pi. Pi uses pi () to determine the circumference of the algae island.
In brief it can be said that symbolism plays a big role in the storyline 'Life of Pi'. The symbols help us to truly understand Pi's fight for survival. The colour orange, the pets, religion and pi are just a few examples of how symbolism can be used in the story. Despite the fact that Pi changes his accounts of the sinking of the dispatch and his survival, (by substituting people for pets or animals) the happenings remain consistent along with his original storyline. Storytelling (with symbolism integrated) helps Pi to rationalize his remarkable experience and get over despair.
